| I have a 97 Mariner 135 that is acting up. I have talked to two different shops and they cant seem to figure it out. Hopefully someone here has an idea or 2. When the motor is cold I will start it up, take off, and it runs fine. I will fish a spot, start it, try to take off and it will bog down. Sometimes it quits, sometimes I can feather it and get it to "catch" and it will take off. Once I get up on plane it runs great. The problem seems to be worse when the motor is warm. If I pump the ball while it is bogging the motor dies. If I choke it while bogging it dies. Spark problem? Too much fuel? Too little? Bad gas screw something up?

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Sounds like it could be a carb adjustment of the fuel/air mixture and is running too rich... When you hit the gas, it floods out and bogs down more. When you feather it, you gradually build up and can get it go go... How smooth does it idle? Does the motor shake a bit? Are the RPM's correct?
If anything, what I would consider changing out the spark plugs and trying the motor... usually when a plug goes bad, it is pretty quick, and if nothing else, it is cheap and preventative..

| Thanks for the replies everyone. The plugs have been changed and the amount of spark was checked by a mechanic. It idles ok - a little shake. The rpms are low. I will pull the plugs today and see if they are gummed up again already. The motor was just rebuilt and had been running on double oil. Would it run great when cold then bad when hot if the carbs were screwed up?

If you have been running double oil, the mixture is definitely rich and would explain the low idle RPM and the shake, along with bogging when you hit it. How much longer do you have to run double oil on break in?
I would bet that once break in is done, things might be a bit better. Best not to adjust the carbs to match the mixture yet... once you get on normal oil use, then see how things perform...

| I am off of double oil now and I tried new, no ethanol gas with some carb cleaner mixed in. It helped a little but it still struggles to get up on plane. Even though I cant afford it right now I am going to have to bring it back in for some professional help.

| Did it ever run good after being rebuilt? if no do a compression test on all cylinders. Then you can start with the fuel system. Does the bulb stay hard? Are the plugs all fouled from double oiling? |

| Compression test has been done. All plugs have been changed. Thanks for the ideas though.
My front compartments have a pretty strong gas smell in them (front gas tank). Could it be a clogged tank vent causing trouble?
