Posts: 90 Location: Athens, Ohio | I picked up a used Trini from one of our friends on the forum, for pulling bucktails. I've never used one before and after throwing a few baits in my pond I had some questions... Casting distance seems markedly reduced. Is this due to improper adjustment of the reel? It's spooled with 90 yds of 100# Masterbraid. Backlashes seem really easy. Is this all a matter of thumb control? Would it cast better with a lighter braid? I"ve got an extra spool of 80# suffix 832 I was thinking of. Any tips on using a non-levelwind reel appreciated. But WOW! Is this thing fast

Posts: 51 | - Tighten the drag down all of the way like you're supposed to on all of your musky reels - Tighten the cast control knob all the way down - Overhead casts only - Use a smooth casting motion that doesn't accelerate if that makes sense; no bomb casts Once I did all of these, I get maybe one backlash for a 3-4 hour trip. I can go weeks without getting a backlash on a Toro or TE, however.

Also on the Trinidad reel it has over 25lbs of drag power on most reel they have 10-15lb max so if U lock down your drag on a TRINIDAD somthing is going to give, your line, rod or U are going rip hooks out of a musky mouth. I do reel repair and I see what will happens when guys over tighten the cast control knob to tight, use your thumb !!!!!!!!! The TRINIDAD and SALTIST reels are made to JIG not to cast 12oz baits so U have to use your thumb to cast them. On your TE and TORO set your spool brakes all 6 of them on and keep your cast control knob loose and use your thumb, and your reel will last for years without repairs.

Posts: 51 | I exaggerated a little bit with tightening the drag and knob all the way down. I do tighten the cast control knob down to the point where the bait doesn't fall at all when holding it over the water horizontally. I don't even mess with the cast control knob on the Toros and TEs.

My cast control will let a lure down but will not overrun the spool when it hits the water.
