Subject: Question...was this a landed fish or not?

My buddy and I can not agree on this so I'll ask all of you. We (different buddy and I) were fishing a central MN lake in the evening a few weeks ago. I need to tell you this…don’t know how it happened but we forgot the net…back to the story. We had moved a couple of muskies and caught a few slimy pike. At sunset we went back to a hot fish we’d moved earlier; first cast with a Mag Dawg and BOOM “fish on”. Because we had no net the fish went on 4 good runs before we could tail her and unhook her, while fighting the fish she managed to get the back hook imbedded by her eye. We cut the hooks and released the fish with-out ever bringing her into the boat or getting a pic. She swam away a fat, healthy, 45 in fish ready to be caught another day. So the question is…would you consider this a “caught fish” or not?

If a Marlin is considered "released" with about 6 feet of leader out, I think tail grabbing a muskie, and removing hooks would count as "caught". My .02$

I would, if you released it at boat side, and had to remove hooks, I would consider it caught.

Absolutely that is a "caught" or "landed" fish. Given the circumstances, you still were able to get the fish under control, boat side, were able to handle the fish, cut/removed hooks and released her...all under your control. Just because you weren't able to land the fish in a net to be able to lift the fish out of the net, into the boat for a photo, doesn't constitute it as a "no catch."

Lots of guys in the Summer months, while fishing warmer water, will do exactly as you've done as to not stress the fish any more than necessary and will water release the fish.

This certainly isn't something to lose sleep over or have a debate amongst friends with. There's bigger things in life to worry about....

Kind of a silly question really... of course it was a caught/released fish.

Just good natured fun...nobody is losing sleep. I know it was a landed fish and so does he...even if he won't admit it.

It is unless you plan to register the fish where an accurate measurement and picture were necessary. On a personal level it was surely.caught. I netted a fish.a couple years ago that knocked my rod.and reel into the water. I reached for it but in an instant the fish was unhooked, turned around and just enough hoop on the water to jump out. It was about a 47" fish but he was unable to register it in the mi contest.

You have to have six of the seven tines firmly embedded, stumble drunkenly and yell Wooo HOOO for the whole lake to hear.

Caught for sure . Let me ask this ... I was in florida and grabbed about a 120 lb. or so tarpon by the tail and held on for a couple minutes ( and I mean HOLDING ON !! ) until I couldn't hold on anymore ... Is that a catch ?? BTW it was fun !! All the people standing around said I was crazy .... Maybe but it was fun !!

It didn't release itself. That's a caught fish.

I wish more people did what you did, not net it and "have" to get a photo of every single muskie caught, put a tally mark by caught of course, was this a sober discussion between you to ?

I would think netting the fish immediately and getting the hooks out would cause less stress on the fish? You did the right thing by C&R immediately. One question, why didn't you have a net?

IMO definitely a landed fish if you held it and removed the hooks.

On the other hand, I missed netting a nice mid 40's fish this weekend while taking 2 one-handed swipes of the net fishing solo. Last swipe knocked the Slammer right out of her mouth.

Victim of a too tight drag as 2 hooks came back nearly straight. Lesson learned.

Regarding the MI contest where people remove from the water and measure countless small fish, year after year after year. I really think now is the time to do away with that. Just my opinion but guys that catch a couple hundered a year could do everyone a favor by shaking off the small ones...

And as everyone else said, the fish you unhooked at boat side is a caught fish

Your fish was 100% caught.

Years ago... 1997 to be exact, an old girlfriend and I were out trolling. After an hour or so she hooked up and fought the fish to the boat. The leader was touching the tip of the rod and as I went to net it she gave it slack and the fish was gone. She got discouraged and said this whole fishing thing is dumb. I told her not to worry because by IGFA rules, it is a caught fish. Just because you don't have slime on your hands or a glory pic it doesn't mean you didn't catch the fish.... However, i'd probably be angry too, and I wouldn't count it in my log.
