Posts: 551 Location: Columbus, Georgia | I purchased a Tica Caimen left-handed reel back in '05. The reel broke within the first hour of use, and the vendor was more than willing to immediately exchange it for another. I figured if that happened once ... and that quickly ... I'd try another reel. Just so happens that there were few other manufacturers in '05 that produced a left-handed Musky reel. So I purchased a Shimano Calcutta 401 TE ... and then I purchased more of them over the next two years. They are expensive ... and are worth every penny of the price. If you are one of those guys that fishes hard and actually enjoys spending hours overhauling all of your Abu Garcia reels two or three times per season ... then by all means get one. I'd say Abu is about the best cheap reel for the $$$. I'm not knocking guys that get off on servicing their own reels. I'm just not one of them.

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | OK, so we have advice from 6 years ago, and a recommendation to buy a Toro. Have the Tica reels improved over the years, Pikemaster? I'll take a look at them at ICAST and see if there's anything new.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | I have a Tica, they retail for $169.00, they are a good reel BUT they are not a Calcutta, Toro, or Luna. Guys buy this kind of reel and throw Pounders and when the reel blows up in a day they say they are no good. It would make a great backup reel or a good SMALL bucktail or SMALL topwater bait reel. Tica has about 4-5 different series, it has alot bearings and is smooth but will not handle the BIG BAITS FOR LONG. Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | A friend has the blue one in the middle with the big coffee grinder handle and has had zero problems with it.........a great reel. I have not tried the winch but a friend bought one and has had to mail it back twice for repairs....the handle just freezes up. RM

Posts: 633 | I have 2 CA's and 2 CM's both 201, and bought them 6 years ago, and have only had 1 problem, and the factory took care of that. I just get them cleaned once a year, and then do a little lube on them during the season. No problems for me. They are a good reel. I do throw some double 10's, but not that often. I will use them on Magdawg size baits, and down. As far as having problems with reels right out of the box, I have heard of all brands, and levels of reels having issues. There is a standard failure rate in all products.

Posts: 139 | I have had a few caimans and they are indeed smooth but they do not with stand pounders and big 10's all day. I generally use mine for smaller bucktails and topwater baits. they work great for them.
