Subject: running out of gas

yesterday the father in law was pulling tubers around the lake and ran the boat out of gas. After refuelling, the boat was having a very hard time ideling and would run for a short minute and then die. I'm not an expert on outboard motors but I'm sure that running a motor out of gas is not a good thing, but how bad is it. I'm thinking that this motor just needs some fuel ran threw it at higher rpms. Any one ever run out of gas and what were the consecquences? Thanks

I run mine out every fall, and starts and runs just fine every spring.

The bottom of the fuel tank is where any debris and water collect. It is possible that some crude was sucked up and causing problems. Check any fuel filters.

I ran my boat out of gas on accident a couple of years ago and had similar problems. It did have some water in the gas but also found carpet fuzz in some of my fuel lines. Once cleaned boat ran like normal.

Running a boat out of gas never was a problem for my carbed motors but not a good idea for injected motors if you can help it. From what I've read, the injectors don't seem to particularly enjoy being run dry. So, I'd avoid running out with the newer motors.

If he was sipping gas in a wide open state it could have created a lean condition in the engine. Maybe a little scuffing..?
