Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Bulldawgs in the place of suckers?

Its getting to that time of year in which I love and hate-Fall.
Yes it is the time when you have a chance of catching (and releasing) a monster but it is also the time that for half of the day you get to frog around with suckers! Every single sucker I purchase is a d*ck, they either try to act like a bobber, tangle up on everything floating by, find the trolling motor and tie themselves to it in some sort of PETA re-inactment, bury themselves in any and all weeds, and so on not to mention the time I had a sucker try to attack and scare away a mid 40" muskie that had followed 10" suick.
Last fall my fishing partner and began using Magnum Bulldawgs in place of suckers and now with the shallow version I was wondering if anyone else has tried this and if they have had any luck?
I have almost giving up using suckers every year and then will come the day when you get two on suckers and see nothing else. I almost would rather stay home than mess with suckers I'm hoping that maybe I can find an alternative.

Poodles? Kitty Cats? See Jason for a squirrel.[]

When I fish suckers, I keep the front one on a fairly short lead. Inline sinker, so it stays down on a fairly vertical line. Helps keep it away from the TM, and it's really cool when that muskie comes out of nowhere to hammer it!

Tight lines,

When you say use bulldawgs instead of suckers....do you mean simply soaking a bulldawg like you would a sucker?? Simply hanging it over the boat and letting it sit there as you make drifts and cast some other lure??

You bet. We have found that you have to add weight to the treble to get it to hang on a natural horizontal plane. I was hoping someome has tried this with the shallow dawgs it seems that they have a more level fall not the head first fall of the original. The main reson we are experimenting is when you are casting while drifting and hanging suckers they always demand too much casting time. We are trying to use them inplace of the suckers in the same way we use suckers.

How did you do up in da'"YOOP"? Did you get a chance to fish Chicagon ?

I agree, suckers are a pain...they can't they be nicer to me? Sure, have the rubber band break before they touch water...jump out of the boat...snag on a tree (they love to do that)...get caught in weeds...die (another popular one)...they can get to be expensive

That might actually work on a windy day, so would a blade bait.

I don't have alot of trouble with suckers and sometimes I run three. I will put one just out of site and one down aout 10-15ft, both weighted. I will also run one on a bobber weighted as well, 3-10ft below it. I have taken fish on all of these lines in one day.

I've actually tried what your talking about with an unweighted dawg a couple times when I was eating my lunch. I was thinking to myself why more people don't try it. So long as the boat is moving, even extreamly slowly, the bait will run horizonally and have tail action. I say try it and give us a report! Bulldawgs are close to the same price as a couple good suckers w/ rigs (single hooks are expensive [;)] ) and you can us it other times of the year as well. I'd just get some scent of some kind and soak it before you throw it over the side.

Good luck!

Joy of Esox, the Yoop was tough on us. yea, we hit chicagon, but the guy we went w/ had NO clue about what was going on, so...that lake is super clear. we caught some walleyes, but no muskies...bummer.chicagon seems like a night bite lake to me?? i'm ready to go back up there, but maybe in the spring...Paint pond and Mine Field are looking like my choices beides the Monomonee River.

JoyofEsox (David):
I'm gonna try that this fall. Especially on a windy day. Webster fish sure love the dawg....and this might be a fun experiment. I hate suckers too, but sometimes they are the only action you'll get all day. I'll let you know how I did with them this fall because I'm definately gonna try it. Maybe I'll hang a piece of cut bait off the hook or something too...who knows.

Yeah, the UP was cool. Fishing was tough. There seems to be some good water up there....but man, no one up there fishes for muskies. There has got to be some hawgs in Chicagan and Paint Pond. Gotta be. I'm headed back up there soon I hope.

At leas we know the water a little better now. We can fish it with a little bit more knowledge and with a little bit more freedom.

tomcat and Phishin,
I'm glad you got to enjoy the aesthetic beauty of the U.P. but wish you could of stuck a couple of hogs. Our luck on Chicagon has been mainly on low-light conditions and you are right it does have some monsters. Next time you head up I'll send you all my info for up there I have been fishing it for a week every fall for four straight years.
As for my original post on trying bulldawgs in place of suckers today I landed a small musky 29" on a walleye 9" original(weighted) bulldawg suspended 6 feet below the boat in 12 feet of water on the outside edge of a weedbed. I never saw it follow if it even did, also I pushed a stick of berkley strike into the lure thru the bottom of the lure where the front hook connects to the thru wire frame. So it seems so far so good. I really think the shallow version will pay off.
