I've had a 1987 fiberglass bass boat for the last few years that never seems to hold wax or anything else applied to it. I was rubbing a few coats on yesterday and noticed some of the metal flake coming off on my rag. Which confirms what I believed all along, the gelcoat is completely gone. The surface is rough and porous and seems to absorb anything that I put on it.
Once a gelcoat is gone... what options does a guy have? I don't want to pay for a new gel coat, that's for sure. Can I apply some type of sealer or other clear coat over the glass?

You could use two part epoxy based paint and automotive paint guns, but the prep is a pain.
