Just announced 100 jobs cut in the Iowa DNR ...

"DES MOINES, Iowa -- A spokesman for Gov. Terry Branstad said the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is eliminating more than 100 positions because of budget cuts the agency has been forced to absorb.Spokesman Tim Albrecht said some additional contract positions are also being eliminated. All the positions are now vacant. The move was announced to employees Wednesday.Although the agency's annual budget hasn't been approved, proposals now call for a $2 million cut, to roughly $12.5 million.Albrecht said the Department of Natural Resources is implementing a "strategic vision" that is more efficient but still meets the agency's core functions. The agency oversees state parks and is charged with protecting the environment. It also deals with fish and wildlife issues."

It's just sad we let our government get so upside down, we need to resort to this ...........

"All the positions are now vacant." I'm not really sure what that means, but I'm guessing, they are eliminating future hires/not replacing retirees. Still, not good. This is a eye opener for myself. It's time to pay much more attention to what Big Government is doing with my tax money.

Making a guess many are summer/seasonal positions not being filled.

I agree with you that I hate to see the DNR's budget cut. All it hurts is you, me and everybody else who enjoys the outdoors in Iowa. But isn't it kind of ironic that your questioning big government cutting money from a government agency and trying to overall reduce its size. Budgets are in the red and the money needs to come from somewhere.

Actually what I am saying is: We as Iowa residents need to pay more attention to HOW and WHERE our tax money is spent. There has obviously been serious amounts of our tax dollars wasted on what I would consider frivolous, and unnecessary stuff. Same goes for the federal government.

Great! We had over 100 deer poached near my house last year including a few cameras stolen about .25 miles away from where I live. Going to have to go back to the days of "Cowboy" justice I guess!

100% agree MuskieMike. I see stupidity run wild with tax money wasted on useless crap and then they fire 100 good hard working people. Ridiculous! I pay 10s of thousands of dollars into FET and I am sure hardly any of it actually goes back to natural resources likes its supposed to (IMO).

I just went to a bow hunting safety class with a Iowa DNR officer this morning. He said by this time next year, they'll be laying off an additional 5 conservation officers at the very least. He also said the budget will be so tight, they"ll be struggling to keep gas in their vehicles . Devastating is the word he used for our new budget. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for getting us back into the black. We've ran up enough deficits. It's just sad that it has come to this. Also, I didn't realize it until this morning, but apparently, the DNR no longer has the authority to manage the wildlife population as it sees fit. All harvest numbers must go through the Governor's office now. Our wildlife will be governed by political policies, rather than biological policies. Very very sad to hear that.
