Welcome to 2011 MuskieFIRST MatchFishing!

We’ve had some great competition over the past several years, and are looking for a great time again this year. The idea of MatchFishing is to enjoy some friendly competition with teams from all across the muskie’s range; US and Canada, with the emphasis on fun!

When teams sign up for MatchFishing, they are assigned to a “pool” of 4 teams. Over the course of June, July, August, and Mid September each team is expected to fish one “match” against each of the other teams in their pool. Points are awarded depending on the outcome of the match: win, lose, or tie.

At the end of the pool play round, the team with the most points wins the pool and moves on to the playoff rounds starting in September and finishing with the MatchFishing Championship which usually takes place in late October or early November.

Participation is FREE, and there are only a few minimum qualifications to get involved:
- able and willing to fish
- able to provide digital pictures of your results for posting here on MuskieFirst

That’s it, so join in on the fun!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We will be launching a new system for this year, implementing some of Zach's magic. We expect to launch the forum by late May. Rules will be the same as last year, except that dates selected by both teams for a match must be adhered to. You have until MAY 30 to sign up so your first round can be scheduled for June.

Sponsors for this year include Fishouflage, Suick Lures, Tackle Industries, Mercury Marine, Tuffy Boats, Frabill, ShockMaster, and MuskieFIRST
.

Please use this thread to sign up!

More Cowbell was last year's Champs; we will have new Fishouflage Performance Hoodies specially built for presentation to them before the new season begins.

Update on the Fishouflage Hoodies: Outdoor Identities told me they would have the new hoodies in stock and ship them within three weeks of today, May 31.

RULES:

---------------

Teams:

A team consists of one or two fishermen, fishing with each other from one boat at the same time. Teams may not have 3 people in the boat at any time during a match.

If one of the team members is unavailable, a substitute may fill in, but one of the people fishing must be a team member.

Professional fishing guides are welcome to participate as competitors in MatchFishing with their own team, but teams may not hire a paid guide as a substitute team member.

---------------

Matches:

A match consists of two teams fishing against each other on the same day. Teams may fish different waters (this is part of the fun), but all fishing by both teams must take place between 12:00am and 11:59pm on the day of the scheduled match.

No rematches are allowed during the pool play rounds. Each match will be scored according to the results on the day of the match: win, lose, or tie.

---------------

Scheduling:

***Aside from getting the muskies to cooperate, setting up matches has consistently been the biggest difficulty that teams report in MatchFishing. Problems scheduling matches and lack of participation has resulted in unfair pool results and a real loss of enjoyment for teams looking forward to fishing their matches. As a result, we have created a structure that guarantees that every team will at least be able to count one match against every other team in their pool. The rules outline this below, so please read them carefully.

Pool play matches can take place any day between June 1st and September 15.

Teams are encouraged to arrange matches at times that work best for both of the teams involved.

At the time they sign up for MatchFishing, each team is required to provide 2 days during each of the months of June, July, August, and September that they guarantee they will be available to fish a match. Teams will not be entered into MatchFishing until they provide these dates.

If another team in their pool challenges them (by posting it online) to fish on one of the days they provided, the match will take place on that day unless both teams agree to change it. If it is absolutely impossible to set a match date, each team may fish on a selected and approved date during the same week, Sunday to Saturday. The dates must be selected by the teams in advance, approved by both teams and admin, and will only be allowed this option if absolutely no other resolution can be accomplished. No results will be posted in the case until both teams have fished.

If a team is unable to fish on a day they guaranteed and were challenged and no alternative date during that same week could be selected by one team, the match still counts. They will simply receive 0 points for not catching any fish that day; this will result in a loss (0 points) if the other team catches any fish or a tie (1 point) if the other team doesn’t catch any fish.

As noted earlier, it is asked that teams work out scheduling on their own.

---------------

Items:

Once a match is scheduled, teams will be assigned an item of some sort. This item must be visible in a picture taken with any muskies they catch on the day of the match. Past items have included hairbrushes, tupperware, pumpkins, etc…we try to make it unique and interesting.

*** The judges will provide items online and/or by telephone no sooner than one day before the match. Failure to include the item in the photograph disqualifies that fish from scoring points. No exceptions. Items will not be given out early under any circumstance. In the case of a 'same week date selection' each team will have a special item given to them the evening before the match date selected.

*** Results must be reported by PM or by telephone to the judges no later than 12:00pm (noon) the day after the match. Teams failing to report results by then will not be given points for any fish they may have caught that day. No exceptions. The Judges will place results and images in the 2010 Match Fishing Reports Thread. That thread is locked. No other reports will be allowed...DO NOT POST YOUR OWN RESULTS!!! PM or email results to the judges.

Pool Play Rounds Match Scoring (fish points):
- We use a “Muskies Inc” style scoring process, with a minimum size of 30”.
- 30” = 4 points
- every 1” above that earns 1 point
- any ½” is rounded up

Pool Scoring (standings points):
- 2 points for winning a match
- 1 point for a tie (equal points for fish caught or a double-blank)
- 0 points for losing a match
- -1 points for failure to schedule a match (judge’s discretion)
- Tie-breaker for winning the pool will be largest fish caught during pool play rounds.

---------------

Playoff Rounds:

On September 16, the winner of each pool will advance to the playoff rounds. From this point forward all matches are head-to-head, with the winner advancing to the next round. The bracket pairings for matches will be determined by seeding the teams according to total fish points scored in pool play rounds. The number of teams involved will determine dates for the playoff rounds.

During the playoff rounds, rematches will be allowed until one team wins. If neither team is able to win the match before the end of the time allowed, total points from all pool play matches will determine the winner.

Playoff Round Match Scoring (fish points):
- “Muskies Inc” style scoring process, with a minimum size of 35”.
- 35” = 4 points
- every 1” above that earns 1 point
- any ½” is rounded up

---------------

Judges:

All judge decisions are final.
We’ll do our best to be fair with the goal of maximum participation and fun.

There's another thread for setting up the matches.

And reconcile the fact that most teams failed to post the required info (dates to fish) by the deadline.

I agree all teams should be in, but with so few this year maybe other exceptions should be allowed, too, like 3-somes.
