Location: Eastern Ontario | Wouldn't it be refreshing to have a board where people had to register and post under the names their mother gave them. No mutiple screen names.no mutiple guest posts. That way EVERYONE would know who they were dealing with . Frank Shelton Tweed Ontario [email protected] Edited by horsehunter 4/29/2011 6:54 AM

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | No. First, it is nearly impossible to administer. I can register under an assumed name and address with a Gmail address to support it, and use any board name I want. As far as anyone would know, I'd be Jan Johinnisan from Roanoke. Second, it's not our policy and never will be. It's funny, people complain wildly that we carefully moderate the boards, and then complain we don't moderate them enough. I always figured that if the complaining continues from both camps at a nearly even rate as it has for 10 years,we must have it about right. If someone tries to use multiple board names 1) We know pretty quickly, and 2) if they are doing that to cause problems, one is deleted immediately. Posts: 272 | I've never built, much less moderated a website, so with that..... I don't understand how anonymous "guest" logins wouldn't be harder to moderate, vs requiring a login? No attempt to push a botton Steve, just honestly asking. At least if I register under an assumed name, you can yank that assumed name and I have to go through the effort of registering again before I can post again. IMO, as a consumer of this medium, tightly policing threads and anonymous posters are entirely different things. REALLY can't wait for muskie season!!!!! -Eric

Posts: 7039 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | All I have to do is change my signature and no one knows who "Slamr" is. Then again, since I havent been to an M1st outing in years and rarely go to sport shows where M1st is, very few of you know who I am, anyways.

Posts: 1030 Location: APPLETON, WI | I've never understood this either but each forum is different. If you have to login as a "guest" just to type out a reply, chances are - it shouldn't be said to begin with. Why not man up and just login with your registered screen name? Oh, that's right... because you're a coward. I'm logging in from work right now on my lunch break as I do most days of the week so unfortunately, this IP address cannot be blocked. But when I get home? I'd challenge even the best system administrator to find my IP information. If I want to block my information, I'll block it. And assuming you did have the wits and know-how to locate me on the world wide web, what would prevent me from getting another free public e-mail address at my local library or coffee shop and logging in there??? The answer? Nothing. The fact remains people are not going to smart off and act tough the way they do on this forum if the system administrator forced individuals to login with a registered screen name. Do you honestly think someone would take the time to get a fake GMail account, login with a screen name, key in a password and make some smart azz reply just for the sake of what they think is funny? Oh, and lest we not forget about the internet thugs and tough guys on here who hide behind their monitor whilst logging in as a guest. We can agree to disagree as I have with Steve in the past about this... but every single forum I've ever been a part of online has always required a login and password.

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | I am logged in to post. And for what? Knowing my user name doesn't mean you know who I am at all, even knowing my real name doesn't mean you know me and what do you care? It comes down to the content of each post. But do you honestly believe that guests NEVER come on here and post anything worthwhile? There are some people that aren't on the site 5X daily (like me) and when they do check the site once a week or so, they shouldn't have to log in to give input. I think you'd probably be surprised at some of the people who may check in on these sites once in a while and post under guest names. On occasion, guest posters may be much more knowledgable than you or I. (I've seen Joe Bucher himself (verified by the moderator) post on a different site only a handful of times. What's to say other guys like him don't provide insight occasionally under guest names here.) Get over it. Like I said earlier, you don't know me (logged in) any better than any guest. I always figured if you're going to be a jerk you might as well attach your name to your posts so people don't think you're somebody you aren't... Why lie?

Posts: 123 | I know of a few websites that don't allow yahoo or g-mail e-mail addresses. Not exactly sure how that benefits them, but maybe it makes it easier to track them or something.
