Just curious...While fishing with my dad yesterday after the motor had trouble idling at the dock, he went to hit full throttle and no power. Motor would run rough, smoke a little and wouldnt go over8-10 mph.

Can't figure out what happened. It ran like a top the last 2 times out, the most recent - 3 day ago. The only ethanol gas used was the first 10 gallons he bought last spring when he bought the boat. Ever since then, all ethanol free gas.

The motor was winterized by the dealer, with a few gallons of stabilized fuel left in the tank, then topped off with fresh fuel at the beginning of this season.

Any thoughts?

Perhaps the motor is in "safety" mode where it powers down. Do you have a smartguage hooked up to the Opti? First thing to check is your battery and make sure its got enough juice to power the Opti, otherwise it can go into the safety mode. Something similar happened to mine when I fried a fuse in a cable coming off the alternator and it wasn't charging the battery. Worked fine the first time or two out and then powered down as you described.

No smartgauge, and he just charged all batteries the night before.

I too am guessing its in guardian mode. Did you run the oil down to nearly the bottom of the reserve tank on the engine?

To my knowledge he has always kept the oil full. Said he keeps checking it and is surpised how little oil it uses.

Have you checked the belt? I've blown belts in 90 opti's and have had similar performance results. Pull the cowl, and the top plastic shroud will pop off. You will then be able to look at the belt. If that isnt the problem run the engine on a hose and start pulling off ignition coils. If you find one that doesn't shut the motor down, replace it.

Spoke to him today, wasn't the belt. I don't think he checked the coil yet. Thanks for the help!

Ditto! Warranty should cover the problem.

Fouled plug or bad coil? Eletric fuel pump not working? Fuel filter clogged?
Check spark, leakdown and air/fuel pressures. Have the computer read for any codes also.

I had fried ignition coils go on my opti - common problem apparently.
It was under warranty and the service / support I received was exceptional!
When they went it took out the computer / board.
$3000 of work!!!!!! (no cost to me:)
