| I know that it has been recommended here that you recess the handle on a Calcutta 400TE if you decide to put a power handle on it (whether it's a Trinidad handle, LJV handle, etc). But I just bought a 400LJV and I'm wondering if the same issue exists with stripping the handle threads even when the handle is designed for the reel and comes stock on it.
Anyone have any insight, should I have the handle on my new reel recessed as well? |

Location: Hugo, MN | Shouldn't need it. The issue is that the power handles from the Trinidad 14 are thicker than the stock handle on the TE's. There aren't enough threads exposed above the surface of the power handle, so the nut only spins about half way on. The LJV was designed with proper thread exposure for the handle it came with, which is true of all Shimano reels. When we start making Frankenstein reels, we run into these types of situations. |

Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | I am going to have mine done this week. Last year in canada mine stripped and "popped" the nut the first day of the trip while ripping dawgs. I sent the reel back to Shimano and they said that they would only fix it this once for free. I was actually quite shocked at the response, especially when the reels cost what they do. Anyhow, I am not going to take any chances. Not only am I going to machine the handle, it will not be used for big rubber again. I truly believe the high amounts of side force from ripping pounders is too much. I will be going to a Saltist or another Toro for this application. |

What reel did you have this problem with? Did you end up using a different handle? |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | The LJV uses the same drive axle as the TE so the stock handle on a LJV will take up 1-2 more threads because it is thicker. I like the Trinidad 12-14 handles because it has a counter weight, both the LJV & the Trinidad handle needs to have a counter bore done to the stock hole on the handles.
