Posts: 1030 Location: APPLETON, WI | Ryan Marlowe - 4/15/2011 2:35 AM Why buy a Porsche when a Cavalier does the same job? We could probably make this same statement with just about any inanimate object in our lives. Depends on how deep your pockets are and what you value as "important". Refrigerators, coffee makers, denim jeans, bottled water, Blu-Ray players, etc, etc. I don't need a pair of $400.00 True Religion denim jeans from the boutique in the mall. Does that mean they do a "better" job than a $30.00 pair of Carhartt's from Fleet Farm? I also don't need to spend $9,000.00 on a nice European refrigerator from Sub-Zero when my $1,000.00 fridge from LG works just fine. I'm sure both are quite capable of keeping my food at an optimum temperature, right? Or am I way off-base here? What about bottled water? Do I need pay $3.00 for 12oz. of crystal clear Fiji brand bottled water? I mean, I can get bottled away from Evian on sale for $1.50 for 24oz. Twice as less for twice as much. Both would seem to do an adequate job of quenching my thirst, don't you think? In other words, I can't justify $450.00 for a trolling rod. But I can justify $100.00. I'm guessing under real-world situations and scenarios my rod from Black River Rods will suffice just fine. And given the reviews and photographs I've read and seen, doesn't look like I'm going to have any issues landing any fish with it either. There's no right or wrong answer. Everyone is right.

Posts: 944 | The Custom X trolling rod is the best and strongest trolling rod I have seen. Musky Innovations Trolling/Live bait rod is a good one also. I have used Ugly Sticks also and had good luck. Also Make sure you use Good rod holders- Like Down East Salty S-10's . Do not use any plastic rod holders for musky or sooner or later you will be sorry..... PSYS- That Diawa you bought on line used to be mine. It was a back up reel that was hardly used. Had too many reels needed to get rid of some. A friend sold it for me. The line that was on it was #40 Big Game it is 4 or 5 years old I would change it out. Good Luck, Jeff Hanson madisonmuskyguide.com

No, no... I got my Daiwa on eBay. There wasn't any line on it and it was still in the box. It honestly doesn't even look used to me. I just got it spooled up tonight with 40-lb Trilene Big Game. I'm pumped to try it out! Had I know you had a Daiwa for sale... I probably would've grabbed it from you.

my Black River rods have trolled every bait I've pulled up to 6mph. they have great backbone plus a forgiving tip for when youu're fighting that fish of a lifetime. I think they're around $80 a piece. for a 6-rod spread that's less than $500 total rather than $1620 for custom built rod. I can afford it, and in something like a reel or a boat it's worth paying more. Rods are a different animal and you can get great performance out of value-priced options.

When you're going to decide how much to spend on a rod, and what rod to get, you just need to think of the purpose for the rod. When you are casting, lighter weight and the "right" action are priceless. When you are trolling, the rod just needs to give your lure the right action and not tear the hooks out when the fish hits. There are many rods that fit that bill which are very affordable. Shimano makes some great trolling rods that are glass/graphite composites in many lengths and actions for under $100. 30lb mono and a 9' rod = fish in the net. $200 for a rod, diawa line counter and 300 yard spool of mono. Hey guys Chuck DiVito here, Just want to say thank you for everyone asking questions and stopping by our booth at all the Musky Shows. I also appreciate all the posts on this thread. My thoughts are this. In todays market no matter what you are buying you have alot of choices. There also is alot of uncertainty out there and if you are like me have been struggling to make ends meet. We try to put out the best possible products under the Big Game Tackle, Custom Lures, Custom X Rods, and Radtke Minnow lines. ALL of our products are made right here in the USA. Our products are not the most expensive nor are they the cheapest. But, I can assure all of you they are made to last and our customer service is right up there with anyone. My advice is to buy the best that you can afford. There is nothing wrong with buying a catfish rod if that is what your budget allows. I appreciate all of the posts and also all of the support from those of you using our products. For any of you that would like to learn more about the components in our rods or lures and learn why they are different you can reach me at 630-991-7012 any time and I will be happy to help you. I again thank all of you for your continued support and without you guys Tony and I could not be doing what we do. Good luck this year and stick a monster. Chuck

Posts: 1 | We have been using the Fenwick Elite Tech - 8'6" Muskie Glass Trolling rods, and have been pleased with them. Check them out here: http://fenwickfishing.com/prod.php?k=378069&sk=309774&p=PURETM86H-2... (1161126) copy and paste this link We have them paired up with Abu Garcia 7000i Syncro trolling reels with built in line counters. We really like their drag system. I see that they are not offering these reels with the line counter any longer...too bad Check them out here: http://abugarcia.com/products/reels/round-reels/ambassadeur-convent...
