I just purchased a Hummingbird 898cSi for my Tuffy Esox LTD and was wondering if anyone had pictures or advice on where on the transom to install the transducer. I want to make sure I do it right the first time! Also, I am thinking about getting the RAM mount with the 2 1/4" ball do you think that is overkill? Thanks in advance for all of your help...

Consider using two transducers with a Y-cable split. You can put the expensive SI transducer on the transom up above the bottom edge so it's protected from hitting anything but below the idle-speed water line so it gets readings. Install a shoot-through high-speed transducer inside the boat for standard sonar readings while running at speed. This is standard practice on most bass-style boats.

I had a similar question on my FishHawk last year. Don't know if it's any help. I had to install my transducer on one of those plastic boards so the beam would clear the livewell inlet screen. Without it, my port side signal was inconsistent.

Just make sure it's got a clear shot on each side. It has to be unopstructed or you'll see it on your screen.

As for the 2.25 mount, they're what I use. It comes down to the water you fish and weight of your units. If you fish big water, big waves, the smaller mount will usually have issues with larger units. I did run a 25C, and then an HDS8 on the smaller mounts for a while on LSC, but changed to the 2.25, and they do hold much better. But if you're on small water and don't take a beating, the smaller mounts will hold. Some say they won't, but they held my 25 and 8 in everything but very rough water.
