Musky_Slayer, here on the Petenwell Flowage they are dinner for a lot of our muskies. Second largest body of water, twenty-nine miles from the Nekoosa dam down to Petenwell dam and the DNR estimates the population to be 1.7 million. This is why browns and gold’s work so well.[;)]

I am not so sure that carp are utilized as much as we think they are. Too bad, there sure are alot of them, especially the petenwell flowage. They get too big too fast. Only the biggest musky in the system can utilize them to any extent.

Up to a certain size they are eaten here also by both musky + rockfish..stands to reason since they are a soft rayed fish + plenty of them. A 40+ lb rock was found thrashing on the surface a few yrs ago w/ a 5-6 lb carp stuck in his throat, + their mouth isn't all that big. [:0]

Actually they are utilized quite heavily in the Petenwell, and they are very slow growers in there. The big carp in Pete are very old fish, but it takes them a long time to get there. Time and time again I'm rewarded as Todd Said in a school of lipped lovelies with a gold or orange lure. A few times I've had very large muskies spit carp scales out in the net at boatside on Pete. This summer I witnessed something scary down there. It was a 9 fish night(hits that is, we only boated 4) for my girlfriend and I, and we both witnessed a musky struggling to get a 6-8 lb carp down from the surface before finnally giving up. We inspected the chewed up freshly killed carp and were both in awe that moonfilled evening@!!!!

Muskies do eat carp here in Southern Ontario, however I don't think that it happens all that often. I don't believe that muskies target carp specifically, but will take one if the opportunity is there. I would concentrate on immitating more significant forage such as perch, suckers, cisco, etc.

Keep your hooks sharp.

This question gives me an idea!
With the probability of the Asiatic carp invading the Great Lakes via the Chicago River maybe we can push the stocking of muskies heavily in lake Michigan to feed on these invaders? [:0]
Hey maybe the DNR's of the Great Lake States can engineer a strain off muskies large enough to feed on even the adults rather than poisoning the whole river.[;)]
