Location: Contrarian Island | I have a 2008 Suzuki 175 four stroke on my 690 ..put it on after the Merc 175 EFI went rattle, rattle, thunder, clatter, boom, boom, boom..... I lost about 3 mph top end, with 2 guys I can consistently hit 51-52, the EFI use to push it 54-55. But the gas mileage is a lot better and it purrrs...I think around 250 hours now it hasn't missed a beat...If I had to do it over again I would lean towards the same thing.... I run the exact same rig. A 1996 175 EFI that is just horrible on gas. There are tons of hours on mine and have been kicking around the idea of replacing it. What is your opinons of dropping down to a 150 optimax. I have found some great deals on 150's. I too can run right around 53-54 with the 175. Do you think with the 150 I can be still in the 50's and with the right prop have a good hole shot.

If you dont mind me asking, what did the Suzuki cost installed. I know the shifter and wiring has to be changed. The only reason I am thinking Merc again is all the changing the dealer would have to do.

Location: Contrarian Island | a 150 opti would push it right around 50 I would think. the dealer parted out my 175 and gave me around 2k for it I think...it was around 10500 installed. yes, they had to switch up some things but I am happy w/ the motor

Posts: 726 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Jim, I run a '99 692 w/ 150 opti and a 21P Tempest Plus. The boat also has a 15 hp 4stk kicker. I get 45-46 mph on mine. I'm not sure it's "over" as far as tactics to improve speed goes. I haven't made a lot of effort at it. It would be nice to get a little faster but as a rule I don't run full out as it is. Running @ 38 mph or so is plenty fast to get around on the lakes I fish and fuel economy is good. Regarding holeshot, I've got no complaints at all. It gets up and goes even with full gear, three guys, livewells full, etc. I'd like to try a 19P and a 23P to see what difference it makes. If anyone has a 19 or 23 Tempest Plus in the eau claire area, please let me know. In all, I'm happy with the rig so any tweaks to improve performance is just icing on the cake. Jono

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | Jono ... did you consider the Verado or the Yami 4-stroke when choosing your Opti? how did you land where you did and what were your key decision points?

Posts: 726 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Sled, I found the boat with it on already. Done deal! Wasn't my preference to be 25 hp down but honestly I don't miss it and I love my boat. J.

Any boat can be kept this good looking if one chooses. A simple wipe down that takes 5 minutes after each time out does amazing things.

Location: Contrarian Island | thx guys, yup, I usually wipe it down after each use with some bassboatsaver and it keeps it shiny.... key to keeping fiberglass looking good is don't let the hard water spots build up.
