Really? If they wanted the world to know I think they'd have named them in the video.... Seems kinda like a rude question, and if someone answers..... Well thats even worse

I'm not too certain you are going to get your answer here...! You can always just try to email them and ask..? Won't hurt to try. You are from IL so it's not like you'll be pounding the lakes in the Vilas every weekend. Mark Lijewski - [email protected] Gordy Hastreiter - [email protected] Jason Sloan - [email protected] These are all the emails that are on their website.

Location: Northern Wisconsin | Just trying to find a place to fish for a vacation... I live 8 hrs away from Vilas and only make it up there one week a year at most. I know there are 100's of lakes in that area with muskie but I liked the looks of those lakes they were fishing. They were fairly clear and had decent muskies. Seemed like a fair number of big fish along with consistent action. I was intrigued because Lijewski said one lake was only 600 or 800 acres and I was thinking that would be a good option for me as I would be fishing from a 14' row boat with a 10 horse... no electronics or trolling motor. I'm sure none of the lakes are a big secret but I can understand why they and some of you guys wouldn't want that information available for everyone to see. If anyone does want to share you can PM me.

Posts: 8781 | As far as lakes to fish, generally speaking? The WI DNR website is a good place to start. It shows the classifications of most of the muskie lakes in Vilas County, and there's also a page you can pull up that gives you stocking histories. There are also a great many lakes that aren't listed as muskie fisheries, that are not known to have bneen stocked. Whether by incidental stocking, or naturally occurring nobody knows. Well, okay. SOMEBODY knows how they got there in most cases. But as to your other point... There are no "secret" lakes, that's true. But there are an awful lot of them that are relatively unfished, and the fishing on those lakes is what you would expect. With limited time on your hands, it's not exactly productive to just pick a lake not known for muskies and go cast it for half a day or a day, but if I had a day or two to kill, that's exactly what I would be doing. Another good resource is the "Fishing the North Country" series of books -- gives a pretty good description of the fisheries, water chemistry, forage, and a map of each lake. I recognized a few of the lakes in the badfish videos, "Yep, I'm stuck. This landing is GAY!" but I certainly wouldn't want to be the one who disclosed them publicly.

Posts: 225 Location: Nordeast Minneapolis | I think the answer from 'THE guest' was more insulting than the question... Geesh! The guy's just looking for a place to fish, for pete's sake- not the secret map to the location of One-Eyed-Willey's secret pirate gold! (Although if anyone happens to have a secret map...) You'd have your work cut out for you, but the WI DNR website might be able to help you out... http://dnr.wi.gov/lakes/lakepages/Results.aspx?location=64&page=mus... It's winter, though, and looking at lakes is fun. Good luck!

I have to make sure I take a break from whatever snack I'm munching on so I don't spit it on the carpet.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I think I would try to send them an email too and see if they send you some tips. I'm guessing MOST people that watch the videos won't know the lakes, mostly because I think there are hundreds, probably thousands of lakes that have muskies in Vilas. I've never made it over there yet, but from what I understand there are a LOT of pothole sized lakes that can have good muskies. I hear you - I would like to fish there, but with so many lakes to choose from I don't know how I would decide which ones to try in my limited time there (granted I would only have to drive a couple hours rather than probably 8 for you). curleytail

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | fish4musky1, Tell you what, get up here, but before you do, give me a call. I'll take you to a couple lakes like that myself if I'm home when you are up north. May not be the lakes they were on, but these puddles are cool to fish.

Location: Northern Wisconsin | Steve, sounds good. If I get up that way I'll get in contact. Right now I'm looking at some lakes near Park Falls so it's a little out of the way but plans may change.

Posts: 1058 Location: Medford, WI | That sounds like a heck of an offer! Lots of knowledge could be learned...I wouldn't pass up that opportunity! As far as the lakes they're fishing, if you fish up there a lot, you will definitely recognize some of them. There's still a couple that I'm not sure about. I think giving the credit to which lake they're on is ignoring the fact that these guys have put hund...no, thousands of hours on the water, grew up in the area, and are able to figure out patterns very well. (I don't think you were being disrespectful at all, just giving them lots of respect.) I don't blame you for asking about the lakes, it never hurts to ask! A lot of it comes down to having 3 or 4 lakes that you know will consistently produce fish and getting to know the patterns and spot on the spots really well. -Jake Bucki

I'd spend more time watching Mark's and Gordy's tactics rather than worrying about where they fish. Some lakes are more special than others, no question, but consider these guys' tournament success. They've done well on more than just a couple of "secret" lakes. Good fishermen catch fish wherever they're fishing.

Posts: 20218 Location: oswego, il | Get yourself a good library of lakes maps, books with lake maps or anything with specific lake information in it. I have been collecting stuff since FHS came out with their area books back around '80. Sometimes you can reference "between the lines" or a background to a map from a video or tv show. Not only that but they are excellent tools for finding good water and eliminating bad ones although sometimes you have to read between the lines in the books too. Location: Contrarian Island | best way to learn new water up there is to do some research, network with other musky guys, hire a couple guides and ask them to take you to some lakes you'd like to learn, and simply putting your hours in...some good places to start... lake maps: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/lakes/maps/DNR/ stocking reports: http://infotrek.er.usgs.gov/doc/wdnr_biology/Public_Stocking/StateM... takes about 8-10 yrs for them to hit 40".... typically an inch a yr after that... Muskies Inc Lunge log... (have to be a muskies inc member to access) have at it....or hire the scuba diver in the Badfish Video to show you where they are.... Edited by BNelson 1/22/2011 1:04 PM

Location: Lake Tomahawk, WI | fish4musky1, Glad you enjoy our videos! No, we don't give lake names. Many of the sources listed here are a great way to do some research and find great fishing spots up here. Most of the lakes we fish are not secrets at all, yet we don't advertise them. Looking through DNR sources for stocking info and checking out the map books are a great way to get on good water. We are very open about what patterns are working at any given time, and please feel free to email me when you're heading to town and I'll tell you what's been hot. Sometimes it's a time of day that has been working, or a certain presentation, structure type, etc. Lots of good water up here, so much that we don't have time to fish all the lakes we'd like. A couple of tips: -What are your goals? Big fish or action? If it's action, many of the lake chains are great. Eagle River, Three Lakes, Minocqua, all have a lot of fish. But you deal with boat traffic on weekends. If it's a wilderness type outing, look at the Presque Isle area and on over to Land O Lakes. The DNR also classifies lakes as to the number of muskies present. Some of our best water has muskies listed as 'present', which means very low population density. We've found that not all DNR assessments are correct, mainly because they were done many years ago and things change. Like I said, please feel free to email me when you're in the area and we'd be happy to let you in on what's going on. Thanks, JS [email protected]

Location: Northern Wisconsin | Thanks for all the help guys. I have been using the WI DNR lake maps but never looked at the stocking data, seems like a great resource. I really shouldn't have busted out the muskie videos though, it's all I can think about now!
