A large fly tying vise works well.

RM,

I slip the coil over an old alan wrench so it fits snug. Then I clamp it into my bench vice, cheap and works like a charm.

I use a J-hook for a wood screen door (it holds the spring) that screws in the hole of the coil then the other end in the vice just dont screw it in the coil to hard some times I have had trouble getting it out.

I bend a piece of bucktail wire to have a hump in it and a j-hook on the end and them I put that in my old fly tying vise. Holds it good and if I lose it, it only take 5" of waste wire to make another.

I do one of two things. I either use a piece of .051 or .063 wire bent into an "L" (similar to using an allen wrench). Or, I just bend out a tag of wire from the actual coil and put that in the vice to hold it.

Try looking through fly-tying catalogs for a tube fly adaptor for a fly vise. Tube flies are tied in a similar fashion to what you're doing with coil spring for bucktails.

I do not tie on coil springs. I tie on used bicycle spoke nipples. Get them free at the local bike repair shop. They have a "flare" at one end so the hair flares out nicely and you just fasten a bike spoke in your vise and thread one on. Very simple and they work awesome. I like the additional flare that thehair gets when you pull the last wraps down tight.

I just started trying my hand at tying, and I have been slipping the coil over a nail that is snug, and that goes into my vise.
