| Had an unexpected opportunity to head out and fish today, and after checking the weather map headed over to GR. Second visit this season, started aprox 10:30, and found water temps from lower 50's to 56 in the deeper center. Color was good in the arms and a little too clear in the center. About an even 10 degrees cooler across the board, compared to last trip, with slightly better water color this visit. The big advantage today was cloud cover all day. Spits of rain in AM but just a north breeze and clouds in PM. Supposed to have air temps in mid 50's, but don't believe it hit that out on lake. Pretty raw. I am suspicious that the deeper water in the center of the lake has yet to flip, I would expect it to bloom up a little if it had recently. Fish started out active, and had 3 show in the first 1/2 hour, and boated a small one, and a mid 30's. Had activity both on crank and pull bait, both colored in non-descript dark/ white patterns. Raised one more before noon and then had a long dry spell, though cloud cover remained. 3 fish in the AM were on shallow bare type flats in coves. always kind of a strange pattern for this lake, but I believe they position for the sun that never came out. If not, it is common to see schools of horse shad, and the last couple of years, white bass, go scooting around the coves, so it might be a feeding pattern. Also, there was a heavy, but in my mind, meaningless, infestation of the medium size gizzard shad available close by. Lake is still at pretty much full pool. Got a third fish at 4:30 pm off main lake, evidently a feeding fish, and biggest for the day. Not much else to add, but would say, observation wise, bait population is higher than normal this year. DNR guys were netting for fall population studies, and reported undersized crappies, and just a few white bass this year. Haven't seen a school of white bass yet in my two trips.
