I bought an Okuma 8'6" XH this fall and love the rod, it's so versatile I can throw almost anything with it. I was thinking about buying another Okuma rod for double tens and want to hear some advice on which Okuma model you think would would handle them better, the XH or the XXH.

Thanks,

Grass

The XH should do you fine except when burning 10s. I have both and prefer the XXH for heavy rubber.

I have both a 9'3" H & the 8'6" XH and preferred the 9'3" for burning tens. Better casting ability & deeper/wider figure 8's. I have used the 8'6" XXH and found it too stiff for my liking. I cannot comment on the 9'3" XH though.

I prefer the 9'3" XH for double tens, as mentioned above the 8'6" XXH is too stiff for me. The 9'3" H will work for them but for burning them and in a fig-8 the XH really is the better rod for big blades. The fish fighting ability of both rods is excellent.

I have both. The xxh is too stiff for throwing anything but heavy rubber etc. It is also very heavy and hard to balance. I really like the xh for most everything up to mag dawgs.

I have both as well. Two weights in a Bass Pro Rod balancer did the trick on either to balance them nicely, it's really comfortable for me when balanced. I throw Wabulls, big spinnerbaits, and big/heavy stuff with the XXH, and double 8's, cranks, and the like with the XH.

I've found the 8'6" XH to be the best for double 10's. It loads up just right when you cast, but it's not too whippy when you're doing figure 8's. It's got just enough tip to be forgiving on boatside strikes, too. I don't have the XXH, but I can't imagine casting something light like a double 10 would be any fun with it. Now... Pounders and such? Yeah, I think the XH would be a little light for that. But I love it for double 10's.

I have the 8'6 XH and it does a good job with the 10's. I agree with above, I don't think I would want to go any stiffer (i.e. 8'6 XXH)

I have the XXH and use it for large plastics and dbl 10s.. it works very well for those. Anything lighter it may be a bit stiff. I tried the XH and after throwing some large plastics and dbl 10s i thought the XXH was better. You almost have to try both side by side. The XH seemed a little too soft for really ripping them.

Thanks for the replies...

So now the question becomes is the 9'3" XH better for double tens or another 8'6" XH?

I'd say if you're burning dbl 10's, go with the 9'3. If you don't burn em, the 8"6 will do OK.

I've had them all, and for double 10's I like the 8'-6" XH or the 9'-3" H. The stiffer ones don't load well with a 10, and are meant for big rubber. They are great rods!

I'm probably missing out, but I really don't burn 10's much. I typically fish them at night and in cooler water by slow rolling them, or at least a medium retrieve just to give you an idea of how I use those baits. With that being said, I typically use the 9'3 XH for this application. It's an excellent rod for this application, as well as for throwing big rubber (although I like the 8-6 XXH for pounders). I also use that rod for ripping big cranks and minnowbaits. It's got a great backbone and a good soft tip for loading up nicely.

I like the 8'6"XH, but have been using it more for smaller baits up to depthraiders and topwaters (been working great as a weagle rod the past 2 years). I haven't thrown the 9'3H as of yet, but may pick one up over the winter.

Some good advice above so hopefully this all helps make a decision.

What's everyone's opinion about the comparison of the XH and XXH when it comes to figure-eighting? I have an 8'6" XH Maina rod and it does not handle 10s around the turns well. I was considering the XXH Okuma for this reason. The XH (Maina rod, not an Okuma) casts 10s fine, but I really see the stiffness mattering more on the eight than anything else.
