I finally bought 2 weagles after hearing so many good things about them. Only problem is that they keep going subsurface. Unless I work them extremely slow with my rod tip up, they go under.

I don't have this problem with other walk the dog baits. Is there a trick to working these?

Thanks

Slack line in the snap down. That will do it. I make two to three snaps before picking any line up.

mseybert is right. but also you have to watch out for the leader too. some of them will cause them to dive, but you need the slack in the line so the lure can work,, and its slow downward snaps.. so you get the swoosh, swoosh , swoosh out of the bait

I have 3 regular weagles, 2 run right while one dives like you have said. For the weagle that dives I replace the front hook with a smaller lighter hook, I also replace the back hook with a heavy 7/0. Also experiment with leader material, I use flourcarbon with these baits but straight wire makes working the bait a lot easier.

You need to run them with a lighter leader....I use 124lb American Wire..a 150lb swivel and a smaller staylock..#4 I think. I have no problems running them fast, slow, in calm or chop with that set up.

I don't use fluorocarbon, I have had better luck with steel. I use 174# solid wire with no swivel. Honestly I believe any leader will work, it just makes you as the angler have to be more flawless.

Hi everyone,

I would say brewcrew is pretty close to being on the right track, along with getting the slack line. If memory serves me correctly, the weagle is made from aspen, which just like any other wood lure, will have different density from lure to lure....making one ride a little higher or lower than another. I have 3 and one is heavier density, one is lighter density, and one right in between.

That little bit of slack line is a key element to throw a bunch of water.

I use a 174# solid wire leader without a snap...just a split ring. I make them to be right about the same length of the lure.

Not a bad idea. I used 100# floro for a while, and never had any issues. I currently use 130# floro with no issues either. The only problem I see from time to time with others working the bait with floro leaders is the bait hanging up on the leaders. I think that's user error though, or caused by longer floro leaders at times. Similar to BC, I don't reel much at all (depending on how fast I want to work them) as I"m twitching the rod tip.

Any other experience with the swivel being a culprit?

people make this out to be much more complicated than it is...use a wire leader, use a fluoro leader, use a snap with a swivel, use a split ring, whatever.

if you want to keep the Weagle working "right" then SLOW DOWN. leave some slack in your line and snap it out. practice makes perfect and you can do it with any rod, reel, leader, etc.

IMO, if the bait wants to dive sub-surface that is not necessarily a bad thing. You just need to pause it for an extra 1/2 second. I have the same issue with some of my homemade topwaters and about a month ago I was tossing one of mine that started to dive under the surface; I continued to increase the speed of the bait(underwater) then when it was about 20 yards from the boat I paused, let it float back up to the surface, twitched it two more times and a nice little 37" exploded on the bait and made it into the bag. With that fish anyways, it seemed as if the change in the water column triggered the strike. Any other similar experiences?

Bottom line..Lambeau appears to be on some kind of "juice" or "hay"...LOL

Sure you can sacrifice presenation and versatility if you just fish slower with any leader including old coat hangers...

but

If you fish a lighter leader, (thinner wire, shorter, no snap, no swivel whatever it takes) you can fish that bait however you want...Fast, slow, medium, short glides long glides, dance it in place...you can make it do whatever you want.

when the weagle first came out a lot of people went crazy buying into the idea that you needed a special rod to make it work, too. silly. that craze all but launched a whole custom rod builder's business. of course, after people learned to work the bait they realized it was THEM that made it work and not a certain piece of gear. telling people they need to use 1970s-era Eddie bait leaders is the same thing.

i'm not saying that gear doesn't help you - it does; and a lighter leader that's the same length as the bait you're using will help any side-to-side bait run more easily. but once you actually learn to work the bait you'll realize (just like the "Weagle Rod" suckers) that you can make it do anything - fast, slow, snap, glide, march, swoosh, whatever - with most any rod/reel/line/leader combo out there. imho, slowing down helps a new person learn the "feel" of the bait so they can reproduce it under any conditions without the need to dedicate an entire specially rigged rod just to one bait.

but "hay," what are you smoking? the stupid bait doesn't catch fish anyway.
