I'd take a look at the Okuma EVX series of rods. I have an 8'6 X-Hvy that I've setup exclusively for db 10's and other large tails and I've been very satisfied with it. As I'm sure you'll hear from others that will agree, for $119, it's a great rod for the money and doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

Here's the link to Rollie and Helen's with the full lineup of Okuma rods:

Same here, they are great rods. And are a good deal at $120. I am looking into getting a 9'3" to add to my arsenal of 2 8'6" EVX x-heavy.

I've got the 8'-6" XH Okuma as well. I like the rod for this application (dbl 10's) but my first one broke after one day of fishing when one of the guides came off on a smaller fish. I managed to put it back together with some powerpro and my girlfriend's nail polish, and the repair held for a week. Took it back to R&H, had to pay $20 to get a new one, something about covering the costs of shipping the rod back to Okuma. I wasn't happy about that. The new one seems to have some sort of issue as well, feels like the reel seat is lose or something. I can feel it in the rod, but I haven't figured out what it is.

I like the way the rod loads on when you cast, doesn't load up too much in the figure 8, either. The telescoping handle is nice for transporting the rod, but I'm a bit concerned about durability. I guess you can't expect miracles for $119, though.

I have about a dozen Okuma rods. No issues with any of them at all. great customer service for those who do have issues. I stepped on a guide on my favorite Okuma one piece topwater rod at the Spring Bay Outing, and broke it. Need to get that fixed. I'm not a bit concerned about durability, mine have been stellar and if I do have one fail, they will take good care of me.

I've had the 9'3" XH Okuma w/ a Toro Winch for a month and a half now and really love it. I have several St. Croix rods, that cost twice the Okuma, with Calcutta 400's on them and have barely picked one of them up since getting the Okuma and Toro. If there is a better rod for throwing dbl-10's for less than $120, I've never seen or held one. That rod is a figure-8ing dream. It also handles fish extremely well. I put a 47.5"er in the net with it yesterday. My one possible complaint would be that it isn't the lightest rod out there, but then again it is over 9' long, and if light was that important then I'd switch to bluegills and sunnies. If you lived near me I'd let you throw it anytime to see for yourself. I went off of other reports I'd seen on here and am glad I did.

i have the Okuma XXH 8'6" rod with a Toro winch for dbl 10's. It works fantastic for this. Best part is the lifetime warranty and the $119 price tag for a good rod. I would say this route works very well for what your looking for.

great customer service for those who do have issues.

I would have recommended the Okumas before this year, but after breaking my 3rd one in under three months, I can't anymore. An 8'6" XH broke right above the handle (hookset on a 32"er) and I've had 2 9'3" break about 2/3rds of the way up and only about a 1/2" difference in where they did it too, one on a hookset (never got the fish) and the other just working a grandma.

The 9'3" was great for most anything and could really fling D10s out there with ease and was great w/ figure 8s. The 8'6" xh was good on D10s and a great mag-dawg rod.

My 2nd 9'3" just broke on saturday & I haven't called them about it yet. But, I can guarantee that I won't see better customer service anywhere else. If only everyone ran their service department like they do!

I know Mark was concerned about a couple rods breaking and they were addressing it. Did you send your problem rods in to the factory? Odd you had three break with so few problems, but they will take care of you for sure.

Okuma actually encourages critical commentary (as long as it's within our permissions for content) so they can address any problems quickly.

The Tackle Industries rods are hard to beat for the money. James from TI is a member here, and for a while was offering these rods for $110 shipped. They are excellent rods anyway, but at a great value as well.

Just give me another 3 weeks and I will have all rods back in stock plus telescopic rods. I plan on doing a $110 delivered special for USA and $120 delivered for Canada again. You will be able to get the rods from Kyle at Big Wood Musky Lures, Aaron with Musky Tackle Online or myself for the special. Can't wait!

What size are you guys liking for the TI rods? It seems like a 9'xh would be the perfect all around rod but i already have an 8'6" xh gander gsx rod that handles anything up to pounders and 13's just fine.

Lookin for a rod to throw smaller bucktails and spinnerbaits but i still want to use the rod for 10's slow rolled at night. Can the 9' mh handle 10's with ease on the figure 8 or am i better off just getting xh?

The XH or XXH will still thow the small stuff easily. I thow down to double 7's on the XXH I'm using and down to mepps muskie killers on my XH.

I personally like the Black River rods. The 8 6 is great for bigger baits. Saint 1 on these boards could help you out.

IMO most XH rods are the best all around general purpose rod you can buy regardless of brand. Buy a rod with a rating in the range of 2-8oz and you will do well. Most XH rods will have enough tip play for good casting but enough backbone to set the hook well. I personally use an XXH rod for almost everything but I like a stiffer rod. With a stiffer rod for light lures you really have to watch your reel settings or you will birds nest on the cast a lot but with heavier lures they work great. JMO and suggestion. My 9'XH rods will be ready to ship in two weeks. If you want to be notified just email me at [email protected] Working with Big Wood Musky Lures online store and Musky Tackle Online to get rods out for $110 delivered special (USA) and $120 (Canada) once they are ready to ship. That special will go until the end of November for anyone who wants one.
