Posts: 101 | I am thinking about starting to video tape some of our fishing trip and was wondering what you guys use. I am looking to get a new camcorder and want the best quality for a fair price. What units do you use and whats the approximite price tag. Also, any tricks for keeping them dry................

Posts: 32924 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | There are quite a few point and shoot cameras that take great video now. I use a DSLR Nikon when it's dry outside, and a camcorder with a raincoat when it's wet, but that's for production work. Look at the many waterproof units out there in the $175-$300 range; just make sure they record audio too. If you are looking for a dedicated camera that records to an SD card and will capture your entire trip, look at the Samsung and Canon hand helds, for a couple hundred bucks you will get what you need.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | Steve, Do you have a favorite Canon. Looking for soemthing in the $300-$800 range for home use as well as hunting/fishing with at least 2+ hours of HD record time. Issue I am seeing is the transfer of the video from teh camcorder onto a DVD you can play on home DVD players. Of course this woudl be used for family/kids events so we want to capture for the future. If you have a few models you know of I would appreciate your suggestion. If you know of a better model vs Canon that is fine too. I just hear a lot of good things about Canon (except video transfer). Thanks James

If you are looking for an HD I'd buy a DSLR in a Canon or Nikon, make sure the camera records for long periods of time; my Nikon D5000 only shoots 5 minute segments. I know we have been using a Canon that's about $800 with the lens at the AIM events, and it offers equal quality to some of the shoulder mount units we use. Make sure the camera accepts a remote microphone. I think it's this one: http://techland.com/2010/02/08/canon-t2i-dslr-records-hd-video-on-t... This is a great camera and doubles as a superior quality HD Camcorder. The mic input allows for a wireless or high quality shotgun microphone to be used. I sure was impressed with the video Dustin Hoye from Sour Squirrel studios shoots with it at the AIM events and it's DTE (direct to edit) SDHC. The Nikon D300S is ground breaking, but is almost twice what you want to spend without a lens.
