I just put a HDS on my boat (console) and had it out for the weekend and everything worked great on it except it would not mark fish. I have the latest updates its set for shallow water and set to the right transducer.I did turn the fish Symbols and alarm on so its easier for the wife to see. Most of the fishing we do is in 25ft of water or less. I have a older Eagle unit up front with the transducer on the trolling motor and it was marking fish left and right. I even turned the Eagle unit off for awhile just to make sure there was no cross-talk. Any suggestions??? Thanks Dave

Tim Schmitz - 8/14/2010 7:50 PM Maybe there's not any fish where you were looking? When I had the trolling motor in the eagle was marking fish then when the back of the boat went over the same spot the hds showed nothing I even tured around a few times the eagle marked the same fish holding tight to some stumps and the hds showed nothing agian. I was hopeing somebody might have an idea of what the problem might be.

How was your sensitivity set on both units? I'm assuming you had the Eagle set at a much higher sensitivity, hence why you were picking things up.

I have a 17ft deep v-hull the transducer is mounted on the back of the boat right were the older fishfinder transducer was mounted that I took off the boat about 20 inches to the right of the outboard motor. the eagles transducer is on the trolling motor. Both units are set to auto I have not touched the sensitivity on either. I know the hds was working the gps was right on and it was marking stumps and weeds and the water depths and temps were the same as the eagle unit. The hds just didn't see fish. Thanks dave

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | Those "fish" symbols are most likely not fish. The computers have been told everything off the bottom is a fish. Make sure to turn off fish ID and you will see the actual signal being returned. Fish are probably going to be a mix of different types of signal returns from lines to arcs. You should really focus on using the units to find structure and not worry about finding fish symbols. Finding good structure will get you fish. If you have good bottom readings and are showing rocks and weeds, etc, then your unit is performing correctly.

Posts: 233 Location: Iowa | I would have to agree muskiemetal. I'd guess those fish aren't really fish. Side story. I can't remember if a friend told me or if I read it on here. A guy buys one of the cheap units from walmart. He took it out fishing and it was marking fish everywhere. He tried different setting but it was still marking fish. After coming to the conclusion that something was wrong with it, he decided to take it back. But before he did he thought he would try something. So before taking everything off the boat he tried putting the transducer into a 5 gallon bucket of water. Turned it on and sure enough it was marking fish. So knowing for sure that something was wrong unit he took it back and explained his story to the department guy. In disbelief, the department guy wanted to try it and see if it really would mark fish in a 5 gallon bucket of water. Endless to say it did and they had a few laughs about it. I think he just got his money back instead of exchanging it. Whether it is a true or not, your post reminded me of this story and I thought I would share it. Anyways back to the subject at hand, I have a hds 10 and hds 7 with the lss-1 on my boat and I would have to say you should probably trust your hds more than your eagle unit. I usually don't worry to much about marking fish and really don't pay that much attention to it. The thing about fish id is that it isn't very accurate. Sometimes it marks them as fish and most of the time it doesn't. Jeremy

Thanks all. I'm going to turn the Fish ID and alarm off. The wife sits in the back and she can see the HDS and she's used to the old unit marking fish. When I'm up front on the trolling motor I can't see it, I'm going to use it to find structure and weeds the gps to get to spots and back to landings and weather reports. So far its pretty amazing I've seen stuff I never knew was there. I'll try the sensitivity levels we were hoping to use it to find bait schools so we can target open water muskies when were running between spots which we never tried before. I'd like to get a 7 or 8 for the front off the boat next year. Thanks again. Dave
