i am wondering how many of you have ever snaged a muskie? i dont mean on purpose but when your casting and you feel a fish hit you set the hook but then it feels weird and when you get the fish to the net its snaged in the back. its like it hits then spits it and then gets hook in the back or side. also this has ONLY happened at night and also has this been discussed on here before.

I watched it happen to my buddy Joe twice last year. Both times if I rember were in the late afternoon and hooked in the back I think they were both low 40" fish too. Has anybody ever snagged a giant 50"+?

Snagged one in the back with a single treble lift off rig. Made the 37" feel like it was 48"

It happened to me once. I had a follow on a grinder and came back an hour later. I felt a hit, set the hook, and the fish charged down the length of the boat and jumped. Due to the dark water, it is the first time I saw the fish and that it was foul hooked. It was hooked a few inches above the tail. I managed to get it in no problem. Fish was 40" on a cowgirl.

snagged one the other day on accident. thought i finally had a true monster. had it snagged in the back. at first i didnt know it was snagged and couldnt even move it. then it came to the surface and i could see it was snagged and backed off on it to not hurt it and it came off (which is good). wasnt big either.

First day I ever used a 10" Suick on LOTW I had a hit, set the hooks and WOW! This is a monster! Can't do a thing with him! Turned out to be a 40"er with the lure stuck in his butthole. That's the only one I ever had that was hooked in such an unusual place.

Had others "foul hooked" but they were all fish where the hooks pulled out of the mouth and the lure was stuck somewhere else too in the near proximity. That isn't too uncommon, especially on fish that jump and almost throw the lure, or fish that roll in the line.

I know a guy who hooked a 48 in the back w/ a suick. He said he thought he had a new state record on because it just kept peeling line off.

i guess thats kinda what i was asking. anyone ever had a fish that they know hit a bait then ended up snaged in the back. by know, i mean that it was a new plastic bait and after the fish it has then tell-tail cuts in it so you know it was in the mouth. and also do you count it as a caught fish?

snaging a fish well let you know if your gear can handel a real beast, thats for sure. its like draging a log that fights back.

I usually snag at least one a year' always late in the year on 1/4-1/2 oz heddon sonar type bladebaits I recall 3 one yr. At the time fishing for walleye and a occasional channel cat to eat. about 5 yrs ago snagged one high 30 low 40 lb fish. always in the head.

I've caught a few that way when ripping crankbaits on the surface. The fish I've caught came up to hit right when I've made the next rip. I caught a 42 by the dorsal fin one time, I thought was a lot bigger.

I caught one last year on a Dawg that way. It ate the lure, but after a few headshakes and thrashing around, the back hook stuck into its back, and the hook in the mouth came out. Still got him into the net, though.

we call that the Minnesota Back Scratcher.....quite a few fish have hit dawgs and then somehow come unpinned and rehooked in the side or back or tail...no idea how they do it...but they do...and I know they are hitting the dawg as I had a brand new mag that got wacked..fish was off for a split second then back on only snagged in the back..dawg had teeth marks all the way down it...

Biggest fish in my boat this year was snagged in the back. I think it swiped at the bucktail and missed. The guy that caught it had 1 barb of a dbl 10 hooked right under the dorsal fin and couldn't get any leverage. It just came in sideways. Netting it was tge difficult part. After what seemed like 6 tries with the net the head of a 51 1/2" finally turned towards the bag. It topped his personal best by 8 1/2". Lol

DCC first deep loop of a figure 8, 51 inch snagged in the back, didn't see it, just felt it when the drag started screaming. As soon as pressure release in the net it came off. With Gregg T. at the time.

The only large fish we had ever snagged was an 80-90lbs sturgeon... Al least we think we snagged it as the lure was just behind the head. We where chucking 10" weighted Suicks over top of a sandy finger point with weedy patches last October and all of a sudden, bang. My buddy throws down a huge hookset. I have never seen a fish run like this one; We thought we were into the 55"+ muskie we saw earlier that day.

45 Minutes later... 75.5" Sturgeon

Got at least three trolling and one casting that way. The trolling thing just baffles me. I'll never figure out how exactly they do this.

I would say they come on giant misses by the fish.

I watched one fish come up and miss a #14 X-rap and hook itself in the tail and another one came unhooked boatside and hooked itself in the tail during it's attempted escape. Both fish were in the low 40's.

Yeah. I had a small 38 incher jump out of the water on me when I was fly rodding them w/a large topwater popper and I thought he'd nailed it.

One heckuva fight and I was thrilled at the stamina.... until I got her close and saw she's been fouled near a frontal fin. I got her to the net fairly quickly but the sideways pull was incredible. Another boat took the pic.

Wish I figure out how to post a pic...

I love this topic! Man---I snagged a 51 inch 35 pounder one year up in Ontario fishing with my Dad. He just kept staring at where the hook was---and wouldn't net the fish. I kept screaming to "Net The D*&M fish". He finally snapped back into consciousness and put her in the bag. It was hooked right in front of her top fin on her back ---by her tail. what an awesome battle she put up. Now to get a 55" + musky like that would really be an adventure!!!---Jobu

Last November my fishing partner snaged a huge fish on the tail. Never got her in. Couple of days later we went back to the spot and i caught her! She was a 50.5" fatty!

I actually lassood(sp?) a 40" fish with a reef hawg. Fish must have missed bait and turned too cause when I got it in, the lure was hooked on the leader/line and pulled snug into a noose just behind the head. Not one hook was in her!

Speaking of weird, yesterday I hooked a big lm bass on a swim jig while musky fishing and the line (80 lb) mysteriously broke about 15 feet up from the lure. The fish then proceeded to jump 2 times in about 3 minutes. I carefully followed where I thought he might show up next, when all of a sudden he jumped 3 feet out in front of me - i stuck out the rod, caught the line and hand balmed him in. Unfortunately that was the best part of the day:( We laughed our a#$es off at that one.

I had one on a glider one time...thought I lost it for a second then realized it was still on. I got it up the to boat and it was snagged in the back. Then it all made sense...popped out of its mouth and then snagged it.
