I have 9 made in Sweeden Abu 6500's. These reels have been great to me over the years. I was looking at getting an affrodable reel for big blades but am having a hard time find anything decent with out spending a wad of cash I dont have. I seem to remember years ago the Abus coming in a 4.1:1 or 3.8:1 version. Does anyone one else remember this? Does anyone know if those gears are avaliable anywhere and one more question has anyone tried a 6500 geared lower like that.

Thanks
Tim

First off all 6500C's and 6500C3's are made in Sweden.

AS for the 3.8 gears Abu made a 5600 C4 Winch a couple years ago with 3.8 to 1 gears. These gears will fit in many of the 6500C3's but will not work in 6500C's. Gears are avaiable directly from Abu at 1-877-777-3950. Make sure to specify that you need gears for the 5600C4 Winch as they never made the Winch in a 6500 size reel.

I converted a 6500C3 to 3.8/1 gears a couple years ago and honestly I found them to be to slow. It was painfull retrieving a bait the gears were so slow but you might like them and for the price of them it's cheap enough to give it a try.

My brother has an old abu that can be switched from "sprint" to "winch", I think you're right about 3.8.1. Whether those gears are available now I have no idea. I don't think the reel he has is anywhere near up to the task for blades though. He throws mepps #5's with it set on "sprint". Good luck to ya

5th lake, it sounds like you are talking about the 6500 2 speed. The gears in these reels will not work in other reels.

the 3.8 gears will work in the C3/C4's with the two pin centrifugal brakes ONLY. If you pull off the crank side, and there are 6 adjustable brakes, instead of the 2 black or white plastic ones, you are out of luck. The drive key on the spools are different and that is what determines if you can run 3.8 gears or not.

My kid just bought one thta doiesnt have the "made in Sweeden" stamp on the side plate. Mine are all pre 1995 so I though maybe the nwer ones where made somewhere now like most things. Thanks for the replies though. Sounds like the 3.8:1 gears will be to low. I have to rell like crazy now with the 5:3.1 gears and a power handle. I though maybe the lower gears would make it a little easier but wasn't think about the fast retrieve needed. I think look into some thing a little bigger like a 7000.

Thanks

I have one of the old school Abus, must have a born on date from back in about the late 80s or very early 90s. Its a 5000. All it says. No letters. Might have been a "C" after the digits, but its worn off. Red in color.

Anyway, that thing has the old school 3.8 stump puller gears I believe. On longevity I can't comment, but it pulls double 10s at a decent pace. You're definitely not burning them, but you're not burning yourself out either. Again, unsure how long it will last, but the older Abus seem to do better than the newer pre-Revo lineup.
