Posts: 157 | How many netting situations have you screwed up? Finally blew my first one the other day and it got me thinking about this topic. Thank god it was a good friend and he could laugh it off. Can't say I'd have done the same..........

Posts: 720 | Dylan, I've blown a few net jobs in my time. Mostly on my own fish when fishing by myself. I can't believe someone would get mad over loosing a fish. Its a fish. Itsl not worth dewelling upon and its certainly not worth loosing a friend over.

Posts: 157 | I didn't mean for it to come off as if I would totally neglect my partner as a friend. Rather that I would be greatly upset and I might have a very hard time laughing at first like he did. Plus this particular friend has a great pheasant dog so I'd need to keep him around. Atleast until pheasant season is over. ![]()

Yeah, once. Had a buddy of mine hook into a 47"er and he fought the fish all the way around the boat to where i set my calcutta, thinking it was ok being on the other side of the boat. it was not laying flat since we were in his dual counsole bas boat. I scooped it in the net and as I did, hooked the reel and it went in the drink. The thrid man in the boat yells, your reel, your reel. I quickly grabbed it but in that instant, the fish became unhooked and sawm 1/2 out of the net which the hoop was just under water and got out as i lifted the net. Felt pretty bad about it but he ended up catching the fish a couple weeks later.

Posts: 8834 | Almost blew it on a 52. I grabbed the net and didn't look at the bag before I tried netting the fish. Turned out the bag was inside out and had a stray hook stuck in it, making the net only about a foot deep. It was a circus trying to get that fish to the boat, but we did get it. Had another time where we borrowed a net from someone else. We didn't realize there was a big hole in the bag. Had about a 43 vanish. We were all staring at each other wondering where it went because we had the hoop well out of the water. You should have heard the swearing when we discovered the hole. It's funny now, but it wasn;t so funny at the time.

Posts: 264 | My little brother blew a 50 of mine last year when he slid the handle through the hoop of our net and couldn't get it back together in time. Still a sore topic between him and I today. Edited by 619musky 6/29/2010 4:01 PM

Me, no botches (yet!). A friend, I owe him two. He's state agency, in fisheries, is used to netting on shocking boats, including fish that recover from the jolt quickly. Two more friends, each in similar positions, I owe one each. But yes, instruction on how you want a net job done is just as important as casting, figure-eighting, etc. You have to instruct before you can criticize. Oh - one friend who got a good net job despite his lack of delivery of fish to net reminds me that a good net job is best accomplished as a two angler deal.

Posts: 572 | My brother-in-law use to claim I was the best netter. Perhaps that was because he caught most of the fish. However, I did net a 50" muskie for him from behind (the tail), which is normally a no, no. Basically, I learned to watch the fish and the angler to determine when to net the fish. Some people you need to tell them how to handle the fish for someone to be able to net it. It's not only the netter, but the one holding the rod too. That being said, when I have a nice fish on and want it in the net, I want to instruct the netter how to handle the net and situation. It's my fish and my call. Basically, I've learned there are those who are good at netting fish and those who have little knowledge about netting a fish. Personally, it is more up the the person holding the rod than the netter to decide how and when the fish is netted.

Posts: 785 | No botched net jobs but back when my step dad got his first 40 I had it on the bump board and it flipped out of the boat and I j managed to get ahold of her before she vanished. Only a 40 and not a huge deal but back then it was his PB and pictures are about the only thing us musky guys have to remember em by. I almost felt way bad... almost. Now he has lots of nice fish up to 50"es so it wouldn't matter now anyways.

Posts: 393 Location: Hopefully on the water | i botched a few in my day. The first was for my dad's first fish in a tourney which moved us up greatly because of it. I wound up getting the bag a wrapped up alongside of the boat and hand landed the fish. Quick release of the hooks and into the livewell to be reigstered. The next one was for my dad again when he had a fish on. I grabbed the net and pulled the handle straight out away from the yoke of the net. Luckily he had it hooked well for me to get the handle back in place. My netting has gotton much better since.

Posts: 299 Location: Ontario, California | Slamr botched one for me a couple years ago. It was a big one too. Edit: It was botched because he forgot the net. I think it was at least 54" Edited by California_Muskie 6/30/2010 2:32 PM

Posts: 17 | Like so many things in life, it's not a question of "if" but "when". I haven't missed one yet but it just means my time is coming. Have had it done to me however. The guy who blew it felt so bad. It's not worth worrying about on either end. It's just a fish your going to let go anyway!

Posts: 743 | My first trip to Canada,my first 50" class fish and a friend dumped her out of the net. Everything went fine, fish in the net, hook came out. I turned to set my rod down and he tried to hoist it in the boat. He grabbed the net and dumped the fish right out. As I turned around after setting my rod down all I saw was the tail as it swam away. WTF happened? A couple of years ago, on a trip with my dad, I had a fish on. Got it to the net and my dad doesn't have a lot of experience with big fish. He put the net in the water to try to swipe at it, and got the hook caught in the net. He hoisted the net up with the fish dangling on the outside of the net and he got it in the boat. I just stood there and couldn't believe what he was doing. He should have known better than that but he got it in.

Posts: 109 Location: Spencer, Wisconsin | During a muskie tourney when I was solo and a muskie hit the lure and after setting the hook I started to bring in the fish, grabed for the net, and it snagged on the fire extinguisher in the boat and next thing you know fish gone and the foreign language started!

Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | Just one....so far, and that was eleven years ago. DH Buc had his fifth legal of the day coming to the boat at dusk. The hooks got caught in the net at the rim!? Of course the fish choose that moment to flip, and of course it "dehookified" itself! That sucked!

Posts: 40 | When I was about 12, I did the same as ksauers dad. My dad had a nice one on, yelled for the net...I netted the lure on inside of net with the fish hanging on the outside. Dad never yelled at me! Think he was just as shocked as I was. Wasn't long after that that we did water release only....Thank God!

Posts: 512 | Only one so far, didnt think much of it at the time, because it was only a mid 30s fish. But it was my nephews first! If i wasnt stupid, i would have realized this, and tried a little harder.. sorry Zach!! Dont feel to bad for him tho, his next musky, first in the net, was a 50.5! So that kinda let me off the hook!
