Curious when you guys are fishing severe breaks if you cast to shallow or cast to deep and reasons why. I know most will say cast deep to shallow, but it seems like I have better luck casting from shallow to deep. Thanks guys..

I believe there was an article about this in a recent issue of Musky Hunter.  The article didn't offer any real definitive info except it depends on where the fish are suspended and/or cruising the shallows...

Yes, Mike Hulbert wrote a great article on this topic in the last issue of Musky Hunter.

Fishing "inside out" is something we do a lot in the kayak community, push pole or paddle slowly from inside the weeds and cast out, it also works good as a drift technique when the wind allows it.

So most of you guys position your boat right on the break?? I have always done best fishing shallow casting to deep.

Fished Eagle lake last fall and saw fish casting deep to shallow on some deep breaking shoreline structure. A few days later we changed the presentation and parked the boat in 3 feet of water just off shore and casted out to deep water and retreived to shallow. The results were fantastic that day. Never hurts to switch you presentations up every so often.

I doubt there is a definitive answer for this question, and it seems to be reflected in these answers.

I guess I would want to know where the high point on the bar was, and if it was near the deep drop or away from it.

I would also venture that I have fished a number of severe breaks that don't really seem to interest fish.

I just cast and not worry about it so much. If the boat is on the outside I cast in. If the boat is on the inside I cast out. If its right on the break I cast in and out and right down the dropoff. Sometimes I work on positioning the boat to fish in or out and sometimes I just wander around the dropoff or in the shallows casting aimlessly this way and that. Funny thing is the aimlessly thing often works the best.

I don't know if the fish always care or think so much. Their brain is the size of a pea. As fishermen, I think we think way to much sometimes.

out about 98% of the time. the idea of fishing structure is to maintain bottom contact. it is easier with baits that dive to bring them up the breaks than down while maintaining bottom contact.
