Has anyone else had problems with the crimp breaking after a short time of use? I have one that has lasted forever and one that I just bought that broke. Different manufacturers.....

Yep, I just had one break myself. Terminator was the brand and it was about 3 days old. I was a little ticked myself. They will be hearing from me also.

Actually mine was a Billy Finn.

Not looking to name names just wondering if others are having the same problems.

Thick One:
Just stick with the .041 or .050 stainless, and forget the other stuff. If you need a soft wire leader, 60# sevenstrand has worked well for me for over 25 years.

I have gone to the MuskyOne special leaders.

Titanium are nice but for almost nothing I can throw away a M1 leader and put a new one on each time out.

Made a beleiver out of Cady, how about that!!!! It is a very slick way to make a leader however.

Steve- while doing some reaserch on using titanium wire- On several web sites, I came across a little fact that titanium spring wire which is used in most titanium leaders, is subject to shatter at a stress point, especially if there's a nick (even microscopic). [:0]

Here's one site, remember all the snap's we use on our leaders are really little custom springs [;)]

The problem may be overcrimping an/or improper heat treating after the leader is made. When I discovered this little tidbit- I decided to never use a single strand titanium leader.

Muskyone- are your leaders for sale or patented, or can you just tell us about them??? thanks

The leaders are patented by another person who does not seem to want to bring them to market. My partner and I make them for our own personal use. The snap is incorporated on the wire itself. This leaves no weak spots for breakage. The design of the snap is such that it can be a little difficult geeting the lure on but will not come off once fastened. Steve can maybe scan one in for a picture. I don't think that we would be violating any laws by just showing a picture of one.

Only problem I've ever had w/ a leader is the one who "oversees" our office, + he snapped a LONG time ago![:0]

Look at the latest ad for Terminator leaders and you'll see the wrap snap design.

Ah yes the Terminator tackle man strikes again. This is indeed the gentleman who owns the patent on this design. Not to hard to make out of bronzed stainless however. .025 to .029 wire works the best.

Yes, I too , had a sold titanium leader break on me, during the first hour of fishing it. No fish were caught on it and it broke at the crimp. I bought mine off of Staminac (Sp) out of chicago I think. Don't know who supplies their leaders but I was pissed !!!! Up on a canada trip and was counting on my equipment to hold up , oh well thank God it was'nt lost on a fish . ManitouDan

I have used Terminator leaders for about 4 years now....much more with pike. I have taken over 100 pike on a single 50 lbs leader. Actually they aren't straight titanium--there are a nickel/titanium (niti for short) alloy. They have been used in orthodontics for 20 years for straightening out teeth.

Main problem with niti leaders is you absolutely cannot tell if the wire has been stressed or is ready to break. Looks absolutely the same until it gives...one of the drawbacks. We (dentists) use them for doing root canals alot also....they are sterilized a certain number of times then all thrown out as not reliable due to breakage. Wonderful, supple, longlasting leaders...but with the above drawback.
