My Lowrance (LMS-334) is running on the original software that came with it. It does lose signal every now and then but thus-far has been merely an annoyance rather than something I consider serious. I find that my software was current about, uh, several versions ago (mine's 1.1.0, current upgrade is 1.7.0).
I find myself waffling between 'if it ain't broke (too bad), don't fix it' and just going ahead and upgrading the new version. I'd hate to see it get worse, but it's tolerable now. Any success or failure experiences I should know about? Does it require a dedicated SD card or can I just use one from another device (i.e., digital camera, etc.)? I don't happen to have an 8mB card laying about the house.
Thanks.
S.

I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've done the most recent upgrade to my HDS to accept the LSS and to work better with Navionics, but I've always done well with leaving it be if I don't need it. (There's a reason they have a procedure to uninstall the updates...just my take on it.)

TJ could tell you better....

Sorno, I'd do the updates, it's well worth it. The 334 has the internal antennae. I'm sure you've already read, but this link provides you all the changes with the 1.7 version on the bottom of the page. The 1.7 update has been out since 07', all the quirks if there was any should be worked out.

On the older units such as the LMS-334, the older LCX units like the 18,19,20,21 and a few others, don't use anything larger than a 1 gig card. I use one that I use in my Nikon, just make sure it's cleared off. Once you get the update on the card, simply turn your unit off, put the chip in, and power the unit, it will or should update automatically.

If you have any questions, give me a shout, or ask Pointerpride, I walked him through how to update one of your units at the office last summer.

Be careful on using any SD card over 1 gig in the older units. The motherboards in there, some can not read chips higher than 1 gig because of the speed to the data on the cards. I usually suggest to people to find a 512mb card (I bet you can find one for extremely cheap) an use it for updates, because the updates are usually very small, few mb.

Can you use a digital camera as the reader to get the software from the PC to the card?

I've been told you can use a digital camera as a reader if that's your only option.

MuskieMetal, you are right, on the older units like the LMS-334 and the older LCX units like the 18,19,20, 21 and a few other older units you don't want to use anything larger than 1 gig.
