Hey, anyone know what's up with gander charging for replacement plans on their rods now? It used to be if it broke then you could bring it back. Is it different now?

I was in my local Gander the other day and noticed what few muskie rods they had left were 30% off and there wasn't any lures other than what was being clearenced. Maybe they're getting out of the muskie game.

Well i bought a few of there rods couple years ago, i believe they had 2 year warrenty, then the following year i picked up another rod that had had the same warrenty but the man that ringed me out said starting tomorrow the warrenty is changing, because every one was breaking them and trying to get a new rod... So that was about a year ago, i would put money on it that they have a new policy. If you have the original receipt with the warrenty printed on it they must honor that. But as for what they are doing now i am not sure.

As far as i know they have a 2 year warranty. You just have to have a reciept in order for them to honor it. At least this is what i was told this past Christmas when i purchased one for a gift.

I just bought a tournament series rod about 1 month ago and they still have the two year in store warranty. The guy there told me it doesn't matter if it is a product defect or if you slam it in a car door, you bring it in and get a new one no questions asked.

I was in our local Gander Mountain a few weeks ago and they said the new Muskie rods weren't in yet. They usually sell out last years models before the new ones come in. Makes sense I guess.

I was in the gander mtn. in Lakeville last week , they were filled to the gills with muskie baits. I was also in the Woodbury store a few weeks ago they really didnt have much . They did have a 8' Tournament Extreme IM8 muskie rod marked way down plus 30% off that. I walked out of the store with a 54 dollar muskie rod. The salesman in the fishing dept did try to sell me the warantee for like 10 dollars covered all damage to the rod. Pluss I believe he said it was walk in replacement. With out the coverage you could wait up to a month for gander to check it out and they nolonger guarantee replacement without the added insurance. I think I got that right.

Ya, it sounds like they are no longer replacing broken rods without the replacement if the damage is caused by the user.

Hey guys, I work at Gander and should know the answer to this...I believe you need the additional warranty (Summit Protection/Replacement Plan) for any coverage outside the first 90 days; however, I work tomorow and will clear up what it is with the fish dept. manager and will report back here.

Oddball,

I have a few of those Gander rods and they are nice for the money (especially what you paid!!). Did they have any 8.5 ft Gander rods in Lakeville?

I purchased the summit protection plan on my tourney series rod in April. Broke it July 2nd. Gander fishing rep in Blaine treated me like an idiot when I tried to exchange it. Said the policy was 30 days for in store exchange and after that you need to call Summit Protection directly. Anyways, went through nearly 2 weeks of runaround with Gander. Very disappointed in Gander Mountain. :-(

Although good rods for the money, it's a crapshoot on warranty. As some of you can probably see in this post, many people at the store don't even know the warranty. In fact, i asked a couple of days ago and got 2 different answers. One sales guy said "2 years" the other said 90 days with receipt. At the same store mind you. Now if they don't know, i wouldn't put much faith in any warranty unless its in writing somewhere.

those after market $10 warranties from the big box stores are usually worthless. They don't always honor them and when they do they make you wait 6-8 weeks for an in store credit.

First off, I know this is not right but if the big box stores do not cover you on a warranty issue just buy a rod and return the bad rod the next week. Its not the right thing to do but if they do not honor the warranty then they are in the wrong too. I know I know two wrongs don't make a right......but IMO customer service at many big box stores has gone down 10x in the last 10 years and its your hard earned money and they need to stand behind their promise to you as a consumer. Waiting 6-12 weeks IMO is not standing behind their promise to you and most definitely not honoring the warranty is not standing behind their word....

GM in Geneva, Illinois charges $20 for two stealth leaders, any size. And double cowgirls are $29.99 each... what's up with that?

About 6 or 7 years ago the local Minneapolis Gander store was selling Uptown Bulldawgas for $5 each in a big bin. I bought about 160 and sold them all on eBay for about $13 average. I know that Gander paid a lot more for those lures. Not sure why they price tackle like they do??? I have also seen lures for about 1.5x more retail there than the suggested retail. All I can say is jump on those lures when you see them low like that at Gander. The next day they may be 4x higher lol

I am the new muskie pro at the maple grove gander mountain. We have a bulk amount of brand new split grip rods up to 9'. Plus our other gsx tourney rods, and st.croix rods. As for the bait selection...I try to keep the selection looking good and depending on which gander you go to its all about the person doing the ordering and staying on top of it... I am also trying to get new colors of pro dawgs and other brand baits that we do not already carry and get rid of the things that do not sell so well. When I am out of product it does seem to take a while to get the new product in sometimes. And the rod warranties are written on the tags as a 1 yr, 2 yr, 3 yr and so on depending on the price and quality of the rod. They ended the lifetime warranty a few years ago but we do still honor those warranties. ALL gander rods come with a warranty which is no questions asked. If you buy a rod that is not gander brand you do not receive a warranty. i highly recommend buying a protection plan! Why wouldn't you? People break rods all of the time...if it is a croix it costs more money and takes more time to send it to them than paying for a warranty and having a year after your first 90 days. And believe me guys I DO NOT buy protection plans for anything but I think we have all had a few broken rods be it friends fishing with them or what have you. I had 2 croixs broken on me last year which cost a total of $120 to replace. Gander it would have been around 50 dollars for the protection plans.

But if the protection plan is outsourced you have to wait for it to be redeemed, and if you break your rod on the 1st and go to canada on the 15th it doesn't do a whole lot of good.
I've heard more complaints about the protection plans than positive comments, granted most were bought through DSG and not Gander, just read the fine print on your warranty card and the insurance plans.

I'll bet that the vast majority of "warranty" issues with Gander, or any other rod makers rods, are not warranty issues at all but more related to abuse or poor treatment of the rod. Breaking a rod in a rod locker is not a fault of the warranty and you should not be expecting Gander to give you a new rod for your neglegence.

Warranty! I'd just be happy if my local Gander would still carry Muskie rods.

Exactly. A manufacturers defect never takes a couple years to show up. If the graphite is of poor construction it should break on one of your first hook sets. Warranties are getting more and more strict by companies because of people abusing their policies. They need to make a profit or they can't make your rods. I like how St. Croix charges $20 if its a manufacturer defect and $50 if its your fault.

I agree with both of you. There are hardly any rods that make it out of a manufacturer with a defect. It's such a small number that you have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting a rod with a defect in it. The problem is that no one wants to take responsibility for their carelessness and lack of knowledge on how to properly use a rod. If a rod breaks, it can't be their fault, it must be a defective rod! What happened to personal responsibility?
