| Ok if it's passed on through your address book an if you have no one in your address an never open attachment from anybody unless you OK with them to be good. Odds are low of picking up one of these things.I clean packing houses OK,I not all to smart when dealing with these thing.I'am learning and sometimes you have to ask stupid questions to learn.[:bigsmile:] Thanks for any advice I can get. | No stupid questions, Dennis. Your answer is yes, you're at a pretty low risk. Buy anti virus software if you have not done so and learn how to keep it updated. That will lower the odds even more. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know. Jono | |||

| My virus was also sent through my dads addy book too. How?? Jono, sorry I didn't call back, thanks for the help and support though!!! J | |||

| Glad to help Jason and good luck in Canada. As far as the addy book, The people who write these viruses program them to do basically two things. 1. recognize certain files in certain software programs and 2. perform an action on or with these files and software. When you are infected with the virus, the virus looks around your computer and asks (depending on what kind of virus it is) "where is the address book?" "where are the word documents?" "where are the DLL's (dynamic link libraries)?". Your address book is contained in a file on your hard drive. It locates the book and recognizes that you have email addresses there. Then, it locates the files that are programmed to "send mail". It takes over the files and modifies them to their liking so that "automailing" is enabled without you interacting with the computer. This is a very simple explanation but captures the jist of it. It's just code built to find things and perform actions. In that sense, they are no different than any other software you use. I can dig up a more detailed description but I think it would just be confusing. Take the precautions that I and others have mentioned in the virus thread and you will lower your risk. Jason, I'm curious, do you have a cable modem? Jono | |||
| |||
| Jono, yes Jason has a cable modem. Poor guy's on his way to Canada and I've got the H20 to myself!!! Gonna have to fish hard to see if I can catch more and bigger in Wis. than he can in Canada. Wish me luck, I'll need it. | |||

| Thanks Brian, just curious. Good luck! I'll chip in and try to catch a few on my side of WI! Jono | |||
