Location: Hartford, Iowa | I am thinking about upgrading my trolling motor. I have an 80lb Minn Kota Maxxum Pro. Are the Terrovas worth the money? Also, do they have any problems I should know about? Oh yeah, Should I get a 60in. shaft? I have a 17 ft Tracker Targa. Thanks Chris

| I just bought a new #80 terrova U/S and I pilot I think this is as cool as my first muskie. Also go with the 60" shaft you can not make a 54" shaft longer. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | I swapped out a Maxxum for my Terrova and I love it. I bought it mainly so I could use it on the remote and not have to balance on the foot pedal on LSC, and also so I could run it from the back of the boat. I do love it, but you have to understand there's a few differences between it and the Maxxum. First the turn response is much much slower. This is why bass guys hate Terrovas so much. You have to plan your turns so you have time for the head to turn. It's not terribly slow on it's own, but compared to the relatively instant turn of a cable drive, it's slow. The other difference, which is along those lines, is that you can't tell which way your head is pointing just by putting your foot on the pedal. So you have to look or just always be aware of where you're pointing before you goose it. Not an issue for me and I'm so used to it, and it's clean installation I love it.
They'll also say the turning of the head robs battery power, but I've never had an issue with it. Batteries last fine.
Get the 60". Go big or go home. Unless you exclusively fish small water that doesn't chop up and you don't need to worry about pulling the prop out of the water. |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I got an 80# Terrova AP/US two years ago and no problems yet in about 45 days of use. One really nice thing about the one I got is the co-pilot feature where you can sit in the back of the boat and work the trolling motor without a cord or foot pedal. Not that you will use it that often, but when you want to troll spinners off of boards slowly it's really nice to have. Also for dragging suckers, you can sit in the back and work your rod while the motor up front does the work. That way you never have to worry about having the line under the back motors.
On my Tuffy X-190 I opted for the 54" shaft and it works in all but the very roughest conditions, which I'd gladly trade off for not having the motor sticking way up in the air when you are running shallow water. But my boat sits a lot lower than yours so I'd second the motion to get a 60" shaft. I ran a 60" AP on my Alumacraft deep V and it worked great for keeping the motor in the water in the rough stuff.
Over all I'm impressed with the Terrova for ease of use and reliablitiy. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | Co Pilot is awesome. I use it 100% of the time, even from the front of the boat. It's just nice to not have a pedal there. But I do carry the pedal in case I lose the remote, or the batteries (on the remote) die or whatever.... |

Location: Pewaukee, WI | I went from the autopilot to a Terrova 101 a couple years ago and it's unreal. 36 volts of power that lasts all day even in big waves. Like the low profile foot pedal as well. Well worth the money IMO. Also really depends on the size of your boat, mine is a 619 Ranger. Smaller rigs dont need all that power to do the job. I use the Autopilot 80 as a back up on trips and it's rigged with the quick release plate so changing out trolling motors is pretty quick

Location: Geneva, IL | There is a brand new (in-the-box) 80 Terrova/AP/US2/iPilot (60" shaft) in my truck. I picked it up at Cabelas about an hour ago. I have the new charger, 6 GA cable, and breaker. All I need is another Trojan SCS225 and some soft water. |

I-Pilot, or A-Pilot? New, or rebuilt?
That seems a REALLY sweet for AP, I'd sure think IP would be even more. I bought the exact same unit (AP) in September. I called around and did some searching online and Gander of all places was the cheapest I could find. I think the motor and a RAM mount came to just a shade under 14 hundy with tax.
Whether AP or IP, I'd say you did well for that price if they're new units.

| I got a brand new Terrova 101/US2 54" for $770 last year. It seems the units without AP didn't sell well (no big deal since you can add it later and I don't really need it!) and I got a great deal on a closeout model from a buddy who works at a sporting goods store. However, I found the same motor on Ebay for $900 before the mail in rebate at the same time. You can find deals if you look hard enough. |
