Posts: 743 | Are they pretty much the same besides the levelwind on the TE and the power and speed of the Trinidad? I have a new TE for this year and am looking for one more reel for you know what. The Trinidad 14 is the one I'm looking at. Who ever has one let me know how the 2 compare.

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | I have a te and a torium 14. The te sucks for bucktails. Your arm will fall off from reeling so much. When it comes time for a topwater or plastic the te pulls through there. Both are awesome for different applications. I just prefer the faster line pick up for bucktails. The non levelwind isn't bad once you're used to it.

Posts: 458 | Why get another TE? I would get the Trinidad for burning Double 10's and this would broaden your reel selection.

Posts: 537 Location: Gilberts IL/Rhinelander WI | You have to manually move line from one side of the spool to the other as you reel. To make sure the line does not load up on one side of the spool, Not that big of a deal. I would also get a trinidad if you have a te. Not only would burning lures be easier, picking up slack line when using dawgs , minnowbaits, etc., would be great for that reel. I have heard good things about the 700te. That it is like a 400te and trinidad in one. Never tried one though. I bet it's huge, but the trinidad's are not small.

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | I have both the TE and the Trinidad 14. They are both great reels, but the Trinidad is the only way to go if you really want to generate some speed with double tens. The TE wouldn't be bad with a power handle, but then you're up to the cost of the Trinidad anyway, and you still wouldn't be able to burn those blades. I don't think the absence of a levelwind is really an issue after the first hour using one. If it were me, I'd buy the Trinidad 14 to go along with your TE. Hardly a bait you couldn't throw with those two reels.

Posts: 115 | I have both and would recommend both. I use a Trinidad 16N with its 46 inches of line pickup to burn double 10s and 13s. It works great for that. Narrow spool makes the lack of a level-wind less of an issue. For slow rolling double 10 spinnerbaits and bucktails, I have another rod with a TE. And my jerkbait rod has a Curado 301.

anyone who has a 16N probably is bringing in 31-34" per crank if you have it spooled to about 2/3 to 3/4 full. I have one and love it and it is bringing in about 33" per crank. any more than that and you will wear yourself out and is way faster than any conventional reel like a TE or Penn. I would suggest both. you get used to flipping the lever after a few casts and it will become 2nd nature after a while great reels.

Posts: 298 | Trinidad 16N has a shorter learning curve for non levelwind reels. Nothing burns better; not even close. Pricey though. I don't like it at all at night.

Posts: 697 Location: Minnetonka | Sauers- The TE and the Trini are completely different reels with their own applications. Remember, with more line pick-up comes more resistance so the 16 will crank slower and harder than the 14 depending on how much line is on them. The Trinidad 14 is becoming the new industry standard for "you know what"... it will go as fast as you need it to go and the smaller frame gives it good balance, and is more conducive to palming the reel. You can even slow it down to fish after dark if you keep the spool only half full. If you're worried about the price, get a Torium... same reel with cheaper parts. Also, my experience with putting a power handle on a TE was somewhat bittersweet. I cast hard every time... and if I didn't make sure the handle was facing down, the force would carry it forward and click my bail shut and almost rip the rod out of my hands. Also I've stripped out the nut/drive bolt while fighting fish several times with the power handle. I've gone back to the traditional handles on my TEs and save the power for the Trini/Torium.

I had a trinidad 14, was not impressed w/ the speed, sold it and got a 700te, it's just as fast.

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | Is the 700 "tougher" than the 400TE? As far as standing up to 10's? I'm not a burner, but I'd like to have a reel tougher than it needs to be, rather than tough enough to get the job done.

Posts: 540 Location: MN | Like hammskie I've had a love hate with my te with a power handle. But my 700 is great takes a licking and keeps on ticking it's awesome for slow rolling blades but will NOT burn with 4.7 gears burning is left to the 16n's.

Make sure to get the counterwieghted power handle to put on the TE...I've never had my TE w power handle engage, no matter how hard I cast. You are going to be able to cast farther and be more consistent with the TE, I don't care what anyone says about the Trinidad, with no levelwind it's just impossible to perform the same way. If you want to burn faster, turn the handle faster, it's that simple. You can get a DCG to blow out of the water with a TE, so it is plenty fast.

duh? really? i have a 400TE with power handle and a Trinidad 14; they're both great reels that i like for very different applications. i like the 400TE for slow-rolling big bucktails and working hard-pulling crankbaits, it's easy to use and it's bomb-proof. i like the Trinidad to burn bucktails as well as working pounders fast. it takes more practice to use, but once you master it the Trinidad casts farther and just as smooth as the TE. the Trinidad burns baits in much faster and more easily than the relatively slow TE, and that's with a 14 not the 16. i know some people under-spool the Trinidad 16, i've not found this to be necessary with my 14. when i try to burn stuff with the TE after using the Trinidad it feels like i dropped my transmission somewhere...i don't actually want to work that hard, i'd rather use the mechanical advantage of the reel. in the same way, when slower is better the TE shines, and even more so when really working deep-running, hard-pulling baits.

Posts: 540 Location: MN | Do you think we were born yesterday? I had a counterweighted handle and it would engage. As far as the te being fast I don't want to crank like crazy to get the same speed that I can get with my Trinidad. So duh to you CLOWN.

Posts: 167 Location: Ontario | I hope no one minds if I ask a question in a thread which already has a question, but why when people compare these reels do the always refer to the 400TE. What about the 700TE? I did some research on this reel and found it might be a great all around reel for both slow rolling and burning. I got some great feedback from a couple people on this forum. Not quite as fast as the Trinidad, but for people who do not want to buy multiple expensive reels (like me), would this handle most of the big stuff? I am just curious as to why it is not mentioned that much. Am I missing something? I hope not, because I dont want to start the research again!! Thanks

Posts: 540 Location: MN | The 700te is a great reel and will handle all of the big baits you can dish out but with 4.7.1 gears you'll have to crank like mad to burn. If you want a reel to burn baits with and save a little $$ look at a 30lw saltist they are not as shooth as a TE or Trinidad but they'll burn a tail just as well as the trinidads.

I have 2 400TE's with power handels on them both and not once in my life has the reel ever engaged while casting. This is using them 6 days a week as well. If that is happening to you, you need to change the way you cast.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | I have 4 ConQuests/TE reels that have Power handles on them, The one thing is how you cast them, make sure the handle is facing upwards and is pointing at the tip of your rod. Also U must replace part # 1223 clutch pawl spring every year, this spring will get weak over time, here is a little trick you can make a HD spring like I do so I don't have to replace them every year.

Guest, I agree...how can your reel engage when your thumb is on the thumb bar while "thumbing" the spool...I can only see it happening at the very end of the cast. I'm the same as you, I bet I had around 150 hrs this year chucking 10's and 13's without it ever happening. And there is no way you can get more casting length with a Trinidad.

Posts: 999 | I have the 700TE and it has a "manual" engage so there's no chance in hell it will engage on the cast. The 700TE also has 31" inches per crank so you can burn blades pretty well with this and the line pick up is awesome with the big spool for ripping cranks or rubber. The Trinidad TN14 has 36" per crank so it's not that much of a difference. If there was only one downfall with the 700TE it's not easy to palm but I use the foregrip and can cast 14 hours straight without getting worn out so that's a non issue for me. I highly recommend the 700TE. Mr Musky Edited by Mr Musky 2/4/2010 11:17 AM
