We go on a long weekend muskie trip every year. This year we are looking for a nice lake to camp on. We don't want a giant lake because we have smaller boats. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Bryan

Chippewa Flowage or LCO in Hayward Wisconsin. Good camping available and the potential for 70 lb muskies.

Bring along extra batteries and dont be hard on your trolling motor, use the wind as much as you can.

what area are you thinking? There are tons of resorts that have campsites with power you could go to.

Minnesota or Wisconsin. We will travel anywhere. Never thought about the battery issues. Thanks for the info.

If you are camping on the Chip you can usually charge your batteries at a resort as long as you buy gas and beers fom them.

check out Sandy Beach Lake in the Northern Highland state forest. it's a very nice, clean and quiet, primitive campgroup with tent or trailer camping on a small lake that contains muskies. the campground just about never fills up. also very short drive to a ton of other lakes in the Presque Isle area, Manitowish Waters, etc.

If you are beaching your boat, make sure you are sheltered from the wind. The waves will crash over the back of your boat during high winds. I know this from an awful experience. I had to take the floors out and spray/scrub out the bottom. It took me 6 hours to clean it out (20+ rusty crayfish).

The big chip has some great campgrounds but on the weekends they get picked over pretty fast so its best to get one as soon as possible if you go

My family and I have been camping at the Lake Chippewa campground on the Chippewa Flowage for several years now. Great place with a great location right in the center of the flowage. Campground has boat landing with gas for sale, nice wooded campsites both on and off the water with electric hookups for charging the boat batteries (don't miss the waffle cones with ice cream), playground, sand volleyball court, horseshoes and lodge with games for the kids, mini golf and nice swim area. Has flush toilets and showers and also a laundry room and bait shop. People who own it are really nice. Do a google search for Lake Chippewa Campground. We will be up there June 26th through July 3rd.

I agree with the posts suggesting the Chip. (If you're thinking Wisconsin) One great body of water. We've done several multi-day campouts there over the years, with 16' boats a few of the times. Here's the thing about that lake: even though it's around 16,000 acres, it's not a lot of huge, open water. There are over 140 islands that breaks it up a lot. Even on a windy day, there's always some wind protected places to go. And even though there's no way you'd fish it all in that time, do you need to? Pick a corner---and I'd suggest the northeast for first timers. IMO, it's easy to find good spots, has more weeds than the west basin and a good boat ramp on the northeast. From there it's only ten minutes back to get more gas or groceries up on highway B. Even though you didn't really ask for advice on keeping your battery charged, we always took along a small portable generator for that. When you set it back away from the tents, it was amazingly quiet, and it would recharge the battery in a few hours. I do reccomend that you have some type of GPS, or a good map---or you will be lost regulary, as it tends to all look a lot the same until you know it.

Sorry...meant the northWEST corner, as the west basin tends to be weedier. (One too many beers, I guess)

Hooker,
Have you guys from the Cities ever hear of the small (quite) Elec. Honda, Generators ? they work really good for any of your power needs. You could even bring your "HOT" dish and lefska, or ludafisk !!!! (SP)

365 Islands on a lake that I know of....... about 20 Islands to "remote camp" on with good action of Smally's, Muskies, Nice Pike, Walleye, and Panfish ...... and It's busy, Sometimes.

Generators are NOT allowed on the Chippewa Flowage camping islands. Now if one chooses to ignore such rules, I'd think you could get by with a nice quiet Honda generator, but I'd be sure to use it during the day and set if off into the woods away from the campsite aways.

Thanks everyone. This is some great info. I love ice fishing but I secretly want this ice to melt today.

Thanks,

What about Door County, Wisconsin like Peninsula State Park. Should have Electric hook-ups and the fishing in the Bay in suppose to be great.

If you're looking for a smaller lake that has lots of shoreline and structure try Big Mantrap north of Park Rapids.

County park campsite right at the access.

I would hit Island Lake in MN, by Duluth. By the St L also and it's a short drive to some smaller NW WI lakes that have big fish.

Sandy Beach lake is about 150 acres though I don't have a map in front of me. You should be sure that it is open this year, as I had heard from the ranger there last year that that one was on the list of campgronds to close. I hope it isn't true, as I target the smaller 'primitive' type campgrounds like that, off the beaten path. Neat little spot though, and close to alot of Musky water.

I have to second the vote for Big Mantrap lake. This little lake is great for smaller boats, but fishes very big with all the shoreline and structure. The clear water can be challenging, but is also very enjoyable to fish, cause if they're there, you'll see them. The campground is very nice, and many of the sites are well seperated so that you aren't right on top of your neighbors.

This one is on big water (Georgian Bay), so not exactly what Bryan was asking for, but its so awesome, I had to chime in.
Camp near the spot where Ken OBrien caught the biggest one ever. Blackstone Harbor & Pete's Place. 100 square miles of small islands & many with campsites. The many islands break up the wind and the waves, so ya don't have to have a big boat to camp/fish there. And so many rock reefs, I hardly ever got on plane. Very low musky density, but the beauty & big fish history of this place more than make up for it, in my mind.
