Subject: DCGs and Spankys

I have always used Musky Mayhem DCGs and have alot of confidence in the .051 wire, .025 blades etc. However, I might try some Spankys this year. Correct me if I am wrong but aren't they built with thicker wire shafts, .040 blades, and larger clevises? Not saying this is better or worse and don't care. I am just curious about the Spanky hardware.

Thanks

you are right. I have used both and I prefer DCG's because it seems that they create the most drag and push more water. Spanky's are a good bait and the .040 blades will last longer than DCG's.

Thanks. That actually was my concern. I am sure a spanky will last alot longer, and they have caught tons of fish for people, but I want the setup that creates like you said, the most drag. I can't imagine the thicker shaft has anything to do with the drag "issue" if there is one, so it must either be in the thicker blades not spinning or flaring out as far as the .025's or maybe the larger clevises have something to do with it??? Anybody else feal a difference in drag between the two?

I have found that the .040 blade create more drag and being thicker would explain that. Also being thicker, the .040 blades will rotate slower than the .025 blades at the same speed. The Spankys run just a bit deeper because of this. If you want to burn DC10s high in the water, you are better off with the Cowgirls. But each bucktails have their time and place.

The thinner blades will create more vibration due to spinning faster (wire diameter is also a factor in vibration). Each one will have its own sound in the water and the heavier hardware will obviously hold up a bit longer. But I can say this, in talking to the Mayhem folks, there's a reason they use the hardware that they do. They believe that vibration is the single most important factor. They've experimented with it all and found that the hardware on the Cowgirls is what's produced best for them. With the amount of top anglers using their baits since the beginning, I'll definitely take their word over it over my own experience, which is extremely limited in comparison to theirs.

I bought some spankys last year at the show for the first time, and throwing them with my penn 975 I couldn`t tell the difference.I caught fish on them and they spinned right every time,no rolling.I plan on ordering a few more from there website before summer, the hard part is what color blades you want to put on bait.I did good on kinkaid with the bumble bee color with gold/copper blades

I tried a number of brands and have settled on using Spanky Baits and Llungen Tails (DC-10s) exclusively. Both are well-constructed, long-lasting and most importantly CATCH FISH!!! I just bought 3 Spankies at the show and have ordered online in the past with nothing but accurate order fulfillment with super fast shipping. The owner (Dan Moats) takes great care of all his customers and is a true "muskie fisherman's muskie fisherman". DON'T be afraid to order online! http://www.spankybaits.com

Are you implying that the others that make DC10s are NOT "true muskie fisherman's muskie fisherman"? I'm not even sure what that even means?

I bought a couple spankys at the show last year and it seemed the blades were much harder to get going and needed a higher speed retrieve to keep them turning. JMO.

Don't think that's what he meant... I'm thinking that just means he's a good guy to deal with. Winternet getting to you already Gerard?

Two totally different tools.

The whole thin blade vs thick blade thing.

"I'm thinking that just means he's a good guy to deal with."

I got that part. But I've been in muskie fishing since 1985. I've meet a ton of fellow muskie anglers and just about all are great guys. I also know Moatsy, personally and he is a terrific person, no doubt and I am not disputing that. 8ut I also know many other several bait makers that are just as good as him in service and would not hesitate doing what's right if their product doesn't live up to someone's expectations.

No, its just puzzling when someone says something that I don't understand. Just what does a "true "muskie fisherman's muskie fisherman" really mean? Someone enlighten me please. Maybe Golden should think about running for political office with that kind of language?

Example: I tell him I'm going to Eagle in 5 days, baits get to me in 2. I tell him where I'm going, he knows exactly what I'm looking for.

If you don't agree with my feelings, that's ok.

Its not that I don't agree with your feelings, Golden, its just I didn't understand what you meant by your choice of words. You could have cleared that up with explaining what a "true muskie fisherman's muskie fisherman" is.

One last thing, when the OP asks for differences between the two thickness of the blades, why are you interjecting your feelings? That has nothing to do with his question.

Really not understanding where your strong feelings are coming from, Hellebrand. But I'm sorry that my post seems to have offended your obviously sensitive emotional state when it comes to bucktail blades.

DCG, Awesome baits catch tons of fish, well constructed you cant beat em!
Spankys, Awesome baits catch tons of fish, quality made, heavier and run deeper.
DC10s, Awesome baits catch tons of fish, well constructed, silicone skirts give a differnt look
Musky Customs, Awesome baits catch tons of fish, well constructed, custom built to your specs.

I wouldnt go anywhere without a few of each.

I like Spankys over rocks and DCG's over weeds. Both are good baits and are just another good tool in the toolbox. Both companies are represented by some of the nicest people in the industry.

Both great baits. Spanky blades are thicker, hence their durability in rocks is a plus factor. DCG's are lighter and run higher in the water - a benefit to me and how I fish blades.
