Location: Appleton | I have 7 of the Trolling Rods and used them all fall after getting them in September. Haven't had any issues and seemed to hold up well. Good rod for the price. |

| I have the 7'6" H.. beside trying to find one and getting it shipped to me successfully, it seems to be a good rod. It's a little on the heavier side but it has held up to catching fish. i would say its quite like the SC in the same length/weight but cheaper. I will continue to use mine. the price point is pretty good for a solid rod. |

| Heavier side......as in pounds and ounces, or action?
Kinda looking at a different rod or two for next year, as in a different make, but the thing that keeps me coming back to the St.Croix Avid and Fenwick Techna types is the weight in ounces of the rod. Soooo light.
Even stepping down to the Premier from an Avid is a pretty big difference. Avids and Technas have both been part of a revamped lineup of rods..........
Anyway, concerns me when I think about jumping ship.

| Yeah, like the rods. Saw them at the Sportsman in Appletown last month. My gripe is, first of all, that they nixed the Techna line. Second, they don't have just a whole lot of variety in that new lineup, at least according to the literature there and their website. There's basically 4 non-glass rods, ranging from 7'6" to 8'6". The lightest action you can get in a 8' or better is HEAVY.
If my next rod is a Fenwick, it'll prolly come from eBay and be an older one. I'm not in need of any of those specific action rods in those specific lengths.
Anyway, anyone got a weight for the Black River rods?

| i spent some time using the Black River last fall and they're really nice - especially when you consider they are so affordable - i think Rollie & Helen's has them for right around $100. in fact, my wife's first ever muskie came this fall on one of the Black River live/troll rods.
i like the fact that the lineup covers the whole range of lengths and applications, including an 8'6" XH and rumors of a 9'+ rod coming this year. weight-wise, they're comparable to a Premier, it's unrealistic to compare them to rods that cost twice the price or more.

| This might be a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway.
I'm looking at the Black River 8' HM Live & Troll, 20-60#, 1-8oz rod, but want to use it for casting. Will I be wasting money buying a trolling rod and casting with it, or will I get bad performance from casting bucktails, topwaters or jerks with it it since it's meant to be trolled or used with live bait? Those are the specs and price range I'm looking for, and I'll probably be throwing every kind of lure with it.
I'm kind of a newb to Musky fishing so I don't have specific rods for specific lures. Just looking for a nice all-purpose rod that's longer than my 6'2" Fish Eagle II and 7' XML that won't break the bank, and I'd like to give Saint/Black River Rods some business since I'm also a WI small business owner. |

Location: Price County WI | I would get a rod that was designed for casting, I don't know about Black River Rods but the rods that I use, the trolling rod is a slow action, made of glass and heavy. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions Kleck. |

| Thanks John. From what I know it's a moderate action, 35% glass, 65% graphite. After reading a few other threads from guys looking for a nice cheaper all purpose rod, I think I might go a different route or try one of their other rods that is meant to be casted. |

| i think you'll find that their casting lineup offer a nice range of options.
from a traditional 7' XHF jerkbait rod "Jerk", a lighter 8' MHF topwater/spinnerbait rod "Top n' Tail", and even a couple of trolling options.
as John mentioned, the Live Troll is an excellent choice for those things: a nice moderate action so you can "read" your lure while trolling but still a ton of power for sucker hooksets; probably not the rod to grab for multi-purpose casting though.
in an all-purpose rod like you describe, i'd look at the 7'6" HF "Cranker". good power in the rod and a fast tip for forgiveness and putting some "pop" into things when needed for working certain lures.
and of course the 8'6" XHF "Hawg Chaser" is their answer to throwing the heavy stuff like big blades and rubber.

| I've got the 8'6'' medium/heavy last season and works great for casting medium sized cranks and bucktails. And I also use it for a flat line when trolling but would probably tell you to not to put a board on it for there is not enough flex in the rod to deal with that...Now I know its not suppose to be a trolling rod but it worked great all season for me and my Budget!
Not to mention its my favorite rod for casting.. Go buy one and try it out for yourself.
