Subject: Fireline Braid

I just started muskie fishing last fall and used 50# Stren Sonic Braid. I liked it a lot. Very limp line. Easy on the fingers when casting. Lost some of it green color over time but held up very well over all.

This winter I wanted to go a little heavier so I spooled up my casting reels with 80# Fireline braid. I must say now that it is on the reels it feels thinner and tighter. It does not feel like it will cast as well and looks like it might dig in when casting.

I use an Abu Garcia 6501 C3 and a 5501 C3.

Does anyone have any experience with this line? I also spooled it up on my trolling rigs and I do think it will excell in a trolling application. Thanks in advance.

It will behave nicely for you. Great line.

I have to disagree with above. I tried it out the 80# out this past season and had constant problems with backlashes the kind that kick-in mid-cast. Now i know that this could be attributed to "operator error", but don't have the same problem on other setups with Tuff Line or Power Pro. It seems very waxy/sticky to me vs. other lines.

Maybe it not packed tight enough on the spool as I spooled it myself, but I will likely go back to the tried and true.

the 80lb is on all my reels since spring of last year after trying many others over five years and it will stay there this year as well!

I use Berkley Tracer Braid & I think it is one of the best lines on the market today. Very round and very easy casting. As with any braid you must spool the braid very tight on the spool or you will have backlashes. After a day of casting I will let out all the braid on the reel going back to the dock and rewind it tight on the spool for the next time out.

Fireline used to be my favorite by far but then I started having trouble with it fraying and losing strength. It would be ok for about 15 trips and then you would see it change color and at this point it had lost alot of strength! I know because I used to test it. This was at least 6 years ago though so they might have improved the formula since then.

RiverMan I'm talking about the new Berkley Fireline Brad that came out last fall, you are talking about the orginal fireline. To many brands to keep up with them all.

I can't stand this stuff. i tired it once on my bass setup. Granted it was the 14# test but i had more backlashes and break off's than i care to ever have again.

I love the way that the Fireline Tracer casts for me. However I did find that it lost strength over the season, and I really didn't get out all that much either. I lost one fish due to the line breaking, luckily he shook the lure and I was able to retrieve my favorite Jake. At first I thought I must have missed a frayed spot, so I peeled a bunch off and retied. I snapped the line twice more over the next day setting the hook into rocks and kept a close eye on the condition of the line. The moment I found a fray I would retie, but it seemed to me that the line was just plain old losing strength. It was breaking much farther up the line that where your typical rock frays are found. Maybe I got a bad batch and am going to give it one more try this year, but I am on the lookout for a new line.
