Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hi Everyone,
I have been toying with adding a VHF radio to my boat....more or less for when I am on bigger bodies of water where a cell phone may not work (like in Canada for me) I am not needing anything real fancy, but it would be nice to have a good, reliable unit (25 watt...not a hand-held) that is easy to operate, has both US and Canadian weather alerts, and overall a good track record.
Anyone have any recommendations?

| Anything made by Cobra electronics is good. I got a unit like you want I gave $140 for it. It is my second one in a boat, I also use their handhelds and two way radios.. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | I've got a Lowrance 850 that my Dad got on his Lund when he bought it and didn't need, and it's done me very well. Kinda cool that you can very very easily network it with your Lowrance GPS. Three wires and you can set it up for emergency hails, and I forget what it's called, but the individual ship ID, like a phone number. 'Course you may not have Lowrance units, and you may be able to do that with any radio, but I thought it was cool. I've hailed and received from the St. Clair river down to the south end of the US side of LSC running a 3' whip antenna...don't need one of those big fiberglass monsters. |
