Do any of the ABU 7000's engage when you crank the handle or do you have to manually engage them. I'd like to get one for a "Pounder" reel but don't like the idea of having to manually engage it before the retrieve. None of my local dealers stock them so I can't handle one before ordering it.

Both. You can either just crank the reel to engage or do it manually. Kdawg

Once you start reeling (at least with the maroon 7000s), they will engage automatically. I use the 7000's for my pounder reels as well, and they have worked as I wanted for this application.

The 7000 engages by itself, just be careful when you cast because sometimes it shuts on you.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've only used one once before and it was older and you had to engage it manually. If they all do it now I' good to go.

If you get a new 7000 red, make sure the lever is all the way back, with that large power handle it can cause the lever to engage during the cast. The reel works just fine, the handle has to be in the right spot for the reel to stay in freespool.

I found that with the counter balanced handles on my 6500's as well. I have a couple of large double paddle handles on order right now that measure the same as my current ones and that should fix it up. It's not a good feeling winding up with a Pounder and only to hear that "click" half way through the swing......

agreed, the new "counterbalanced" power handles are a joke. They don't have enough weight to actually counterbalance the handle side, and close while casting constantly. The ones I am talking about are for the 6500's with the new cushy gray and chrome handle. the old squared off ones are way better.
I got a pair of 7000 i C3's, the silver ones that have been used mostly for sturgeon this year, and seem really good, the kids are able to cast out a sturgeon rig with them with no problems, and they have been bullet proof. No blown up gears this year!
