just looking to see if anyone on the board is located near the Lake Winnebago area (Appleton, Osh Kosh or Fond du Lac)-if so- what muskies waters in the area do you fish and how far a drive are they? how would you rate the fishing and boat activity?

i am actually considering moving to that area, and one thing i want to consider is how far a drive i will have to make for good muskie fishing from where ever i move to... any advice would be helpful... and any other non-muskie opinions of the area would be appreciated too- thanks!

Zach,
I live in Appleton, and there are very few musky lakes CLOSE by. You need to drive a minimum of an our to find OK fishing and 2 hours to find fantastic fishing.

My weekday musky fixes have come from Little Green, Shawano, Gresham (red lakes), Cloverleaf, Fox River, and pretty soon Big Green and Green Bay.

I will avoid the Winnebago system at all costs. The water quality is HORRIBLE and is just not an enjoyable experience for me personally.

All of these lakes are close enough to fish on a weekday and have some pretty good potential.... but you won't rack up the numbers. However, many of these lakes are beginning to see some management and will become GREAT fisheries in the next decade. We can only hope.....

I talked to the DNR guys in FDL one day a few years back. They told me that when they do there netting for sheephead they have pulled up world class muskies in the nets. This was before my muskie days so I never tried fishing for them but I guess if I was going to fish muskie on lake Winnibago I would probably troll big cranks over the sandbars since they always hold lots of Walleyes and Perch and everyone knows how much muskies like to eat them. There are also a lot of backwater bays to try in the spring. I'll probably try Winnebago my next trip back from Minnesota (because my family lives on the lake), but I would imagine it won't be easy to find fish in that lake.[]It is a great walleye lake and would guess you could hook into some big eyes while trolling Ernies or Jakes.

3 or 4 four years ago, there was a 48"er taken in the spring by a guy northern fishing in Suppley(sp?) marsh. Every once in a while, I hear of a fish caught on Bago. In the 50's and 60's, my dad and uncle caught many LARGE fish in Butte Des Mortes, Winnecone, and Poygan, just up the Fox River from Bago. There were quite a few people fishing for muskies on this body of water back then. They pretty much killed everything they caught then, and that, combined with some pollution and habitat changes, took the population down to very few by the late 60's.

I actually spent a day on Butte des Mortes 2 years ago with my uncle. I rasied one fish on Sunset Bay in 2 FOW, on a Suick. Fish looked to be in the mid 30's. Not heard of any stocking in the system in any years past, so there must be enough of a population to do some reproducing. Perhaps a fishery on the comeback?

I have heard of some talk of stocking Bago with the Great Lakes spotted strain in the coming years. Not sure of the status of that. Perhaps Kendall Kamke of the WDNR could shed some light on this. He monitors the walleyesfirst website on occasion.

Then there's Little Green, Big Green has them, but they are not fished real hard, Random Lake, Elkhart Lake, and don't forget Pewaukee, Okauchee, and Oconomowoc. All these lakes are within 1 1/2 hours or less from Fond du Lac.

Tight Lines,

Shep[:sun:]

The 'bago system could be a real sleeper in the years to come. This year the DNR planted 1160 Great Lakes spotted muskie fingerlings into Lake Poygan, with plans on future plantings. With all the available food, they should grow like crazy.
