| Message Subject: Shallow Invader Modification Question | |||

| Has any one tried to add a treble hook to the plastic tail on a Shallow Invader? It seems as if the muskies I have had on this lure just tried to eat the soft plastic and missed both hooks. If you have added a hook, what size and did it affect the action? Thanks in advance and Good Luck to all,Paul | |||

| I haven't tried any new or extra rigging on this lure. All I have done is to bury on point on the rear treble into the plastic tail. I don't know if it helps the hooking percentage or not as I have never had a fish try to eat it. | |||

| Hope you can see from the attached picture how I've modified my shallow raiders. The wire is 18g stainless, it seems to work very well. I think the bait may even twitch slightly better as some weight is a little further back! Tim www.lureanglers.co.uk | |||

| I have used both wire (60# sevenstran) or a series (3) of split rings to move the hook further to the rear of the bait. I also put the treble into the tail. Has worked good for hook-ups. | |||

| Here is a link to the modification that Tim Kelly is referring to: http://www.lurebuilding.nl/engmodificatiestim.html I really really really wish I had taken the time to try this modification before last weekend. I am now 1 for 8 on this darn lure... and all 8 strikes were from suicide fish that totally inhaled the bait. I am now a firm believer that there is a serious hooking issue with this lure. It cost me a solid 30 pounder last friday!!!! No doubt it triggers strikes under certain adverse conditions.... but what good are they if you can't hold onto them????? I plan to give these modifications a try and I strongly urge other shallow invader owners to do the same!!!!! jlong | |||

| Thanks for the tip BrianF! I am well aware that a softer tip and longer rod MAY improve my hookup percentage.... but I am not convinced that is the issue with the Shallow Invader. Next year I will give it a shot... as I probably don't need a stiff rod to work this bait the way I do. The fish I lost last week hit a long way from the boat in gin clear water. I had the fish on just long enough to roll it completely over so its big white belly broke the surface and she kind of flipped me off with her fins (ha ha). As usual with this bait, the fish came to eat... and took in the entire lure. As soon as she dove (about 1/2 second after my hookset) she simply spit the bait. Nary a hook point, yet she doubled my rod enough where I thought I had her. The previous fish I lost on this lure was about a 45 incher that hit near the boat. I had maybe 10 feet of line out and the fish came screaming out of the weeds and T-Boned the lure. I saw the fish coming, I HEARD the fish hit the bait, I set the hooks..... and never touched the fish. I went back on that fish an hour later and she hit so hard it almost ripped the rod out of my hand. That strike was farther from the boat... and all I had was some dead weight for a fraction of a second and then.... nothing. I'm beginning to think most fish hit this bait TOO well. The head-first strikes position the lure so the diving lip is what you drive into the jawbone... rather than the hooks. When the fish opens its mouth and headshakes it just pops right out! I've lost more than my share of fish over the years.... and usually either blame it on bad luck, operator error, or a poor strike. In this case, I'm getting more and more convinced it is the lure. Hopefully someone can help me find the answer... cause when I do... look out. I'll have a dangerous weapon [] jlong | |||
