Location: Northern Wisconsin | on my last trip i caught 5 small mouth and one large mouth bass while musky fishing. One came on a topwater and the other on suicks and bucktails. Does this mean i was fishing the wrong areas? do you often find bass hitting musky lures on the same spots musky do? it was my first time fishing the lake/river system so i was just trying spots that i thought would have some musky.

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | I catch lots of bass. They seem to like the same areas . Twice this summer I have raised a ski and on the next cast caught a bass.

Posts: 529 Location: Not Where I Want To Be | It seems everytime i'm in the weeds or around them i either see bass following my lures or i catch a few. On 1 occasion this past June i caught 3 Bass in 5 casts fishing for Muskys. It is crazy to see what Bass will actually hit as far as baits go. Had a 14 inch bass hit a 9" Suick

Posts: 639 Location: Hudson, WI | I caught a 21 inch smallmouth on Cedar Lake this year. That thing inhaled a Cowgirl somehow and fought me like a 40 incher. I think Tony Steffes (asteffes) has several 5 pound plus bass this year on Pounders.

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | Bass are bonus fish and lots of fun. Muskie lures are basically big Bass lures or, as some would say, Bass lures are basically small Muskie lures. I have caught my largest Bass ever while Muskie fishing. A couple of years ago I caught a 23 inch Smallmouth and last year I caught a 22 inch Largemouth. What a blast! Both fish were laying within feet of large Muskies too. Big Bass and Muskies seem to like the same areas at times.

Posts: 3920 | I used to fish a UP lake that was gin clear water. It was not uncommon to see a muskie in shallow water and it was very easy to see bass hanging out in timber or rocks in shallow water. It seemed to me that if the bass didn't have any interest in the bait I was throwing then neither were the muskies. I would change change change until the bass chased the bait and then I stuck with the bait and it usually paid off in some muskie action. It was during these trips that I learned to downsize all the way to Mepps Killers and then change colors until I moved fish. I caught so many fish on an all-hot-pink Mepps Killer I named the bait "Pinky Tuscadero" after the Fonz's girlfriend on Happy Days.

Posts: 1316 Location: Lebanon,Mo | Here in the south catching bass on a regular basis while musky fishing is normal. If the bass are active, more than likely the muskies are.And they do share the same weedbed, brushpile,or tree.

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I think Sloan is secretly stocking Bass in Palmer now. I've gotten two over 20 the last two seasons. One on a Jackpot, the other on a #5 Musky Killer.

| Earlier this summer a buddy clipped on a Super Model and immediately caught a bass in the 4 or 5 pound range. We started giving him crap about using his bass gear and generally carrying on until he stuck a 49.5" a couple minutes later......guess you could say he shut us up!!!! | |||

Posts: 35 Location: Johnsonville, Wisconsin | I have picked up many Bass while Muskie fishing. When one hits after dark, you often pull them out of the water on the hookset thinking they're a Muskie! Bass love Muskie lures. There's a small river and pond nearby that I fish for fun and I use mostly Muskie lures as the Bass and Pike in there can't leave them alone. My most unusual catch was a 7" pike on an 8" Suick, what was he thinking? Lusox

Posts: 311 Location: Ontario | They love muskie baits, and the bass we get are never small. Usually 3lbs and up. If you want to win Big Bass in a tournament, spend a few hours with a ten inch Suick or Believer haha. Huge smallmouth seem to really take it personally when a big, jointed Beleiver clunks along the surface above them. I agree that they like the same types of spots as muskies, but if we get a bass off a key spot it usually means the muskie isn't around at that time. If we're checking spots and no other fish are showing up, that's usually a better sign. This year we've seen fewer big bass than ever before during muskie season. Weird, because during May and June when we were pike fishing, we accidentally hooked more and bigger ones than we could remember. They were huge and all over the place. The thing that sucks about getting them on muskie bait is how shredded up they get. Big bass are beautiful fish, I hate it when 7 out of a possible 9 hook points are stuck to their sides, backs etc. Suicks and Beleivers are two of the worst for beating them up. Posts: 1243 Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | The best bass fishing I've ever had for numbers of big bass was throwing musky baits. I wasn't on a musky lake. But I decided to toss my musky stuff in the boat for pike, only to put 7 bass in the boat with 4 over 5 pounds, 2 over 4 pounds, and one 13"er. Bass definitely are not shy of big baits! Aaron

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | My best Muskie/Bass bait by far is a small tandem CJs spinner bait in either skirts or hair. The Bass just hammer them and the bait doesn't hurt them at all. We also catch a lot of Muskies on those small CJs. The bonus fish we catch keep it interesting too. Single hook (not treble) type spinner baits sure make for quick and easy releases. And good and quick releases can often make for more fish in the net.
