Posts: 32930 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Summerlike weather with temps in the upper 70's and moderate south winds will greet the KWM anglers this morning and through the day today on Pelican Lake, Wisconsin at the Gerrits Kevin Worrall Memorial tournament. Guide Norm Wild says the bite has been consistent, offering tight but very active windows throughout the day. Water temps have been warming, exactly the opposite of what should be happening on Pelican during middle September. Watch for a full report including video and an image gallery tonight and tomorrow! Posts: 32930 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | 90 boats headed out this morning for the 18th Annual Kevin Worrall Memorial Muskie Tournament competition from Gerrits Lakeview Inn. The weather was forecast to be near perfect, with highs in the 70's and winds from the south up to 10. Unfortunately, the winds never materialized, and the temps were warmer, creating flat calm conditions with temps on the water at near 80. Four fish were caught, and true to Pelican Guide Norm Wild's prediction, two were hybrids. The winning team Captained by Kevin Kowalski, caught a 40" Muskie in the morning taking home a check for $1500.00. Second place went to Mike Bonack's team with a 39.5" Hybrid, cashing a check for $1000.00. Third place went to TJ DeVoe's team with a 37" and a check for $850.00. He caught his fish with just 30 minutes to go. Fourth Place went to Tim Guth with a 35.5" Hybrid for a check for $550.00. Fifth through tenth were selected by a drawing of all the boat numbers other than the four registering a Muskie. Literally dozens of valuable door prizes were raffled off and given out with the Team registration packet tickets including Black River Rods, Okuma Fishing, Suick, Stowmaster Nets, and many more. All proceeds raised by the event are donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charity in memory of Kevin Worrall. The donation amount will be listed here after the donation jars, raffles, and more are totaled soon. The Gerrits outdid themselves at this event. Everyone was served an outstanding dinner, the prizes and raffle items were top shelf, and the event ran smoothly and was obviously a good time to fish and attend even though the bite was off. I can't thank them enough for strongly supporting the Kevin Worrall Memorial's cause, and for all the hard work organizing the tournament! Thanks go out to ALL the sponsors, and to Tuffy Boats for the generous donation towards the competitors 2009 KWM hats. Also, I'd like to thank the anglers for fishing the KWM, and for the continuing support for the last 18 years. I'm betting we will fill the field at 100 boats next year. Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | That's great news Gary, what an unbelievable amount of money going to the Ronald McDonald house! Once again, I had an absolutely wonderful time and was indeed one of the lucky ones to have boated a fish, my partner Brian Swenson(BrianSwenson2004 on here) definitely worked our butts off for that fish. I guess not taking a lunch break paid off, lol. I strongly encourage anyone thinking of fishing this tournament to do so. There were 90 boats, 10 boats from a full field, I'm guessing after next year, there will be a waiting list. Tons of prizes, raffles and a superb meal at the end of the day also helps not to mention benefiting a great cause! See everyone next year!

Posts: 636 Location: Bloomington, MN | Congratulations Tim on 4th place! I heard that your fish was a tiger...boy those a some elusive critters...aren't they? Your fish, according to rumor, was captured not in Guth's Bay, but in Ladwig's Bay, which once again proves where the clever/zippy ones hang out. I'm sincerly proud as always of you Mr. Guth, and hope that both our names will grace the boards at next weeks Hodag tournament. Did T.J. rank number one among the Tuff-Team this season? Actually I believe it was the D90. The D1000 is so good it doesn't need manual settings.

FYI, TJ's fish came exactly one minute after moon set, which was around 3:30 pm. The reason I know that is because we heard him screaming like a little girl after they netted the fish. SERIOUSLY!!! Great tourney, lots of fun. Good luck to the Hodag Challengers this weekend!

Posts: 32930 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Sled, I believe TJ has a Nikon D90. There is no 'ranking' for the Tuff Team. The Tuff Team is a loosely organized group of folks who own Tuffy Boats and attend outings, promote the brand through guiding, fishing competitively, or like activities. TJ and 179 other anglers fished the Kevin Worrall Memorial and added to the total sent to the Ronald McDonald House, and I thank him and every other angler who participated.

Posts: 62 | This was a great tournament to fish in again and I will definetly be back next year. I do have one curious question, if moonset was at 3:29, what kind of weather pattern was happening around 8:45 a.m. I believe two other fish were caught near this time and a couple more fish were missed. Seemed to be the magical hour.

I hope TJ knows that I'm just jabbing. He was on a good spot at the right time and boated one of the four fish that were caught. Nice Work! I don't know about 8:45 am , but we were moving fish all afternoon. Unfortunatly, all of their mouths were wired shut!!!

Posts: 1 | mr. anderson, I have prior commitments therefore I must miss the hodag. Bummer...wifes nephew has a reception in milwaukee..#*^@.. Otherwise you know me i'd be beating the water to a bloody froth.. Give me a call and i'll let you know where the big girl is hiding. She actually bumped the tail on the suick at the boat but wouldn't open up for a thrilling meal. She came up four times to smile at us. At least she waved each time she left. Is a fin wiggle like the middle finger?Hmmmm..

Posts: 723 | Muskybowl- you were seeing fish all afternoon? my partner and I did not see a single follow all day, had tons of perch chasing our baits in tho. :) Is it me or has the pike population gone down in this lake? seems we could go out at any time of the day, and nail hammer-handles non-stop. didnt matter where either. Are the skis suckn them down like oysters? or the 5 a day no size limit finally cleaning them out a little?

Hard to say. Pelican is such a complexed lake. Just when you think there is nothing in there, WHAM! It all comes floatin' to the top. I think its haunted. I just hope the Muskey Gods are on my side this weekend for the Hodag. We choice Pelican.

Posts: 714 Location: Rhinelander, WI | We stopped in Lakeview for the BEST fish fry in the Northwoods Friday and talked to Gary sounds like plans are coming along swimmingly for the 2010 tourney. Gary may even have some cool extras up his sleeve. I think after 15 years of fishing this with my dad, he is going to give his seat up to my son for the 2010 event, pretty cool making a generational switch like this on a great event. Only hiccup would be a football scheduling conflict. Already looking forward to a great summer on Pelican Lake. Nail A Pig! Mike P.S. Get out and vote to maintain the 50” size limit on Pelican, during the spring hearings! Edited by MRoberts 3/22/2010 9:33 AM

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | if you get a chance ... go to www.rmhc.com ... look for the story of Lance Kopplin. Lance is the son of a friend of mine, his story is local and fits the tournament. Lance is the son of Kevin and Jolene Kopplin and lives in Rhinelander. he's also the national ad for Ronald McDonald House Charities. it's an amazing story of the toughness of a kid and the value of the RMHC Charity. i'm proud to know the Kopplin's and was especially happy to participate in his own situation during his treatment . it looks like the Kevin Worrall Memorial Tournament looks like a great place to continue to contribute to Ronald McDonald House Charities. pay attention to the change collectors next time in McDonalds and make it a habit of emptying your change in them ... it's a great cause that delivers. did somebody say open water??!!! i needed to make use of a Ronald McDonald House a couple years ago. a comfortable room, a kitchen full of food and volunteers to cook it for you...all with lots of care and no questions asked. it's a great great place, one less thing to worry about when you need it most. whether it's through this tournament, the coin bin at McDonald's, or directly contributing, this is a place worth giving support. http://rmhc.org/
