Any one ever used a shimano Calcutta 201 xt? They look pretty nice but the gear ratio (5.0:1) What is that good for?

Why 4.6/1 ratio? With the higher speed saltist, Trinidad, or torium you can really burn bucktails with alot less effort

Do you want to burn them in or just reel them in at a normal to slightly high speed. To burn them, you are looking at the Saltist, Trinidad, or one of the other reels with a 6.3:1 saltwater reels. If you are looking for just normal use, I prefer to use my 5.4:1 Toro over my Saltist.

Your best bet would be looking at the all specs yourself, they should tell you all the information your looking for. Go to a store and pick them up, if it feels good with your hands (size, etc..) it will narrow down what you want to buy. The saltist can retrive normal speed, but you may feel your not moving the handle very much. It will come in slow, Or fast: all reels do not come in the same speed on thier own, it takes your hand and your movement. I already mentioned to you that a 5:4:1 if its built like a tank can burst speed when needed - maybe just get yourself a sweat band and work out.

Think of it like this-
A higher gear ratio like 6.4:1 is good for speed. A lower gear ratio like 4.6:1 is good for torque and getting it in and being easier on your hand.

Another piece of advice I've read on here is that no reel out there will stand up to constant burning of the blades. Speed kills.

The torium 14 I use is very good for burning and normal speed. Has 36" of line retrieved per turn. The bigger reels are 42" or 46" I think. It works fine from slow rolling 13's to burning 10's. Plus with a faster reel you will have to work lots less.

A 200 sized reel is too small for DC-10's

Go for a Shimano Calcutta B or TE 400.

A 200 is made for bass fishing...I personally would not use them for anything muskie fishing due to such a small line capacity. Just spend the extra cash on a 400.

For slow/normal/fast retrieves - nothing that I have tried seems to do it easier than a Calcutta 400TE (spendy though) with a power handle. Much easier then any Toro, 400B, Curado, Abu 6300 IME. Haven't used the Penn mentioned, Okumas, Lunas. For burning, the Saltist is an inexpensive alternative to a Trinadad.
