Anyone try these rods for muskie fishing? seems like a good bargain and have heard good things. Any first hand experience? I am trying to find another back up rod about 7'6" heavy action for lighter jerk baits and all around bucktails.

They only make Muskie rods except for one Walleye trolling rod. Check out the video page for a live demo of the rods.

I am a Lamiglas fan but for a lower cost option these a pretty good. I have their 8 foot and have used all of them and like them. I know Saint and he was fanatical about getting action he wanted and quality. I know he has been working on them for about a year and a half. I am impressed, I do not think you will be disappointed.

i have a couple of the livebait/trolling rods, they're very nice rods especially for the price point. they seem to have just right mix of power and slower action for that application.

i'm going to be trying out the 8' and 8'6" casting rods in the near future, the demo rods that Saint showed off at the outing looked great.

they come with a 2yr unconditional guarantee, and a 5 year reducing guarantee at around $100/rod. that's a pretty good deal.

here's the video demo from the Vermilion outing:

thanks, i just bought one sight unseen from a dealer in Oshkosh. We'll see how it goes. now just have to decide on the reel - Calcutta 400b or St Croix AC300..... the dilema continues.

I am thinking about looking into one of these rods. Just wondering if the guy that did the Demo video("Saint") is a member of this site? Just wondering how to get ahold of someone regarding these rods. If anyone has any info, that would be great. Thanks

Good rods, a few friends of mine fish with these and they love them. Tossed them a bit and must say they have a good action. I would compare them favorably to a St Croix Premier.

I tested out my 7'6" Hvy Fast this past weekend. Even landed a 41" muskie with it. so far i like the rod quite a bit. It has a good action when fighting a fish. The only 2 gripes i have are;

The reel seat - mounted an AC300 and a calcutta 400b to this rod. The front tightening guide (whatever its called) seems to have to be tightened all the way down until you run out of threads. Almost like the reel needs larger mounts on the bottom. It doesn't cause any problems and the reel it tight but i ran out of threads on the seat. I hope no play develops.

Weight - the rod weighs more than the comparible St Croix. Its not real noticible unless you are holding the rods one in each hand with no reel on either. There is a differnece. however, i fished with it alot and didn't notice it after a day of casting. I don't really see this as a big deal but it was heavier.

other than that, the rods are great. i would buy another.

I tried to find the 8'6" rod from these guys but couldn't. When and where are these rods going to be out? I just bought and sold an 8"6" rod that was way too soft! I need something that can actually throw cowgirls. Anyone fished the 8'6" model. What can it throw? What is the action? What model does it compare to in the St. Croix line-up - SlingBlade, Big Dawg comparisons?

If you want a good 8'6" rod why not look at the okuma? I have one of those two and its perfect for large lures. I have the XXH but it also comes in XH. Great rod at $119.00 and a bunch of places have them.

saint let me us the 7'6" heavy when we were at the vermillion outing and it worked great. Its a outstanding jerkbait rod. It worked big gliders like the wable and 10" weagle with no problems. If you are looking for a great rod for less then 100 bucks I would highly recommend them.

these rods are much easier to find than they were last spring. you should be able to get one in person or by ordering them from:
Rollie and Helens Musky Shop
Anglers Point Marina
Pastika's
Ross's Sport Shop
Jon's Sport Shop

i've got a couple 8'6" XH for big bucktails, an 8'0 for cranks, a 7'6 for jerkbaits and pounders, plus a couple of the 8'0 trolling/sucker rods. each of them has been great and i like the fact that they come with longer handles than many other rods.

The stock butts are 14" long on the casting rods.
I add rod balancers to mine which puts them a tad over 15".

Jason St. Mary (saint1) is a person of great integrity, and he's personally resolved the very few warranty claims that have come in on these rods. Anyone who's met Saint either here through MuskieFirst or in person knows that to be true. It's unfortunate to see a Pure Fishing sales manager imply something different.

Black River Rods come with a generous 2 year unconditional guarantee and a 5 year pro-rated warranty. You can buy with confidence that if there was ever an issue it will be honored in full. Jason's contact information is available on the Black River Rods website, along with mine and Brett Jolly's. If you ever had trouble getting ahold of Saint, you can contact one of us and we'll be happy to help out.

nothing to be leary about what so ever............. some where along the line of goin down a quad trail with my rod hanging out the back of my truck and 3 people cramming into a 14' boat i managed to crack the tip of my rod and jason replaced it no questions asked and i live in northern ontario. if somewhere around here carried black river rods i would for sure add a few more to my collection.

lambeau, I'm not questioning anybodies integrity. I don't know Mr St. Mary and I will take your word that he is a stand up guy. My point is that with a start up company you never know if they will be around to honor the warranty. Fig Rig's were heavily sold on their great warranty but since the company is no longer in existance I guess that warranty doesn't mean squat, does it? It sounds like you are more than a little involved with these rods since you know where they are sold and you know about how many warranty claims they have had.

Just curious is this the same outfit that make the Thunder Stick style baits a couple years ago?

fair enough, Wally, thanks for the clarification. and i agree: i think people should buy something based on quality much moreso than a good warranty; the guarantee should just be a nice bonus.

the thing i care the most about is quality. when you can get both quality and affordability at the same time, i'm as happy as anyone else. i choose to buy Tuffy boats, Stealth leaders, Glittertail bucktails, and Black River rods because they each meet those standards, and i'm proud to be associated with them.

check out the rods and make your own decision. i'm impressed with the quality Black River offers and i'm confident they'll be around well into the future.

Every company has to start sometime, somewhere. If the owner is a stand up guy, and he is, and the product meets the needs of a market segment, and it seems to, I'd say this niche builder is on his way to doing pretty well. Ranger Boats was bankrupt a few months ago, and on the auction block, selling to a viable bidder. Fig Rig sold out, too. No company is immune and most are 'for sale' at one point or another (for the right price), all rely upon consumers to buy the products and recommend them to friends. Tooth Tamer treated the Fig Rig customers pretty well, I thought.

That said, I spend my dollars in support of the folks who support the very place this conversation is taking place, and am very happy with the performance of all of them.
