Is this reel to small for muskie? Is the 300 model better suited for the task? I like the looks of the 253 because of the mag cast control compared to the 300's centrifugal brake. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also is the 253 version the same as the St. Croix 250 Avid? I see the Luna has more bearings but yet less line capacity.

Same size as the SC 250. The 253 is simply a narrower version of 300 and has adequate capacity, but I think the magnetic cast control is probably of less value on this reel than anything else Daiwa makes. In my opinion, the spool is really too wide for the disengaging level wind, particularly when throwing musky-sized lures. I think the 300 is the better choice overall.
