Location: Antioch, IL | About two or three weeks ago I got a call from Frank. He remembered a five minute conversation I had with him at the Harper College show in January about a rod a really wanted. He remembered every little detail about what I was looking for and happened to have the blank plus a little free time. He knew that I was leaving for Canada soon and offered to build it before I left. I just picked the rod up today and WOW! Exactly what I was looking for. This is my second custom from Frank's Custom Rods plus I've had the pleasure of fishing with 5-6 more that he has made for some friends. Just flat out superb craftsmanship. I can't wait to stick one up in LOTW in three weeks. If anyone is in the market for a custom rod look no further than Frank's Custom Rods. For both rods I have have specified the intended use and colors scheme only. I leave the wrap style up to Frank. I like a good surprise and Franks wraps are just sick. This one has an old school feel withe some classy red, white & blue thunderbirds. Looks like a rod my Grandfather would have loved. I think the first time I take it out I'll wear one of Gramp's old school bowling shirts. Thanks again Frank.

Location: Antioch, IL | Get in contact with Frank for exact numbers (I don't want to post value without his knowledge or permission). I can tell you that it's not much, if at all, more than you would pay for some of the high end factory rods from a big box store. The one above is a Wicked Series 8'6" one piece Hvy - Fast action. I've rigged it with a saltist LW30 to use for bigger tails and larger cranks (don't throw much rubber, but it would be great for it). Until I got my first custom rod I thought that there is no way they could make that much of a difference over my factory rods. I was way off. Casting is much more accurate and can get more distance out of a propoerly spined and thought out design. The sensitivity and ability to play a fish is also superior. My boat side hook up to catch ratio dramatically improved. A ton of factors came into play when I got my PB a year ago, but one of them was the fact that I was able maintain pressure and finese the fish for "ever" while the netman worked through some "issues" (Freeked and jammed his rod tip w/ bucktail into the net) I'm not sure if I would have been able to keep her pinned with an inferior set up. |

That's funny. I have the same rod (power and action) rigged with the same reel for the same applications. Dave, you will love it! The rod has a bit more backbone than most traditional heavy power rods (unless I have an XH, but I don't think so) so it will bring in burned 10s with ease. Throws Mag Dawgs just as well. Pretty much a great all-around rod. |
