| Going through my stuff trying to sort my baits into a reasonable pile of heaps to take on a long trip north. I pulled all my bucktails, lined them up and actually counted them and pictured them, possibly for everyone's amusement. Doing that and looking at my massive/meager hoard I realized a couple things I hadn't realized before actually lining them up. #1. I need another mepps, maybe 2 or more, in the very simple yet effective, #5 musky killer with the natural tail, with gold and possibly silver blade. Extremely effective and value priced, those little buggers catch fish, and are both confidence and go to baits. If you want to burn on a rainy day, these become almost invisible in the water but not to muskies. #2. My supply of Magnum Bootails is at a bare minimum, and I better get at least one flame blade/black tail before heading up, it is a true dark water head turner. I also have burned through my supply of Shumway flashers until now, I believe I am down to one. You gotta have a chartreuse/chicken yellow and a silver/black or you just aren't fully dressed in the bucktail area. If "Big Boos" represent my "slow", and the simple #5 represents my "fast", the Shumway baits have to represent a happy medium. And last years hottie was a ghosttail, slightly but significantly different from the Gutsch style I am well supplied with. Always make sure you have a couple of last years hotties. It just makes sense. #3. My baits definitely lean toward stained waters. I would carry my Mepps any place and my Shumway "chickens" have to be with me too, but some of my many others, and many brass blades?? My double 10 selection-2, after speaking with many about their effectiveness(not for me) is probably a little limited and I probably need one or two more and a couple silver blade type of things too. #4. Twenty Mepps of various color combos, and 10 of the Gutsch style bucktails, and 15 blades with some major chartreuse on them. Lots of orange and brass in the rest of them. Probably a reflection of the waters I fish more than a generalized selection. #5. What are you guys taking with you when you fish? I figure I will take around 40 and usually before the third day I have honed in on 3-6, and fish them the majority of the rest of the trip. I might however put on as many as 10-12 before settling on one that I like the looks of early. If I knew for sure which I would end up using, it would certainly save some time, but it seems there are 2-4 dependables every year, and some other baits show up, and you don't really know which they might be. | I thought I might be missing some bucktails, but I had over 50 when I started sorting for my trip north. I couldn't imagine I had wrecked or lost all my Boo's, nor could I imagine having NO natural #5 Mepps Bucks. It just doesn't happen in my boat. So, digging around I reached under the other side of the pillow, found my missing box, and dangnation, another 25 bucktails. It is kind of hard to imagine having all these bucktails, bootails, etc. straightline spinners. Well, not really. I fish shallow mostly, only rarely lose one. Tear a couple a year up, probably buy 3-4 a year on my annual trek north. That ends up with a lot of bucktails over the time I have fished musky. Then there are the "bargains", it is really hard to turn down $1-3 bucktails that are new, when I find the occassional flea market deal. I mean......yah know? If I use them I know it's a good deal, if I never owned one, why a chance to get that new secret bucktail weapon. A few have been gifted to me, or swapped for. The bad thing is, I have bucktail after bucktail I have caught muskies on, either in the original, or sometimes with my Boos, in the 7th-9th generation. Hard to get rid of those babies. And then the odd colors. They all seem to have caught at least one needed musky on some trip or another. And then the newbies, I mean, you can really race those little Rizzotails across the surface, and that's gotta be good sometime, right? OK, so I have accumulated in excess of 75 bucktails to cover maybe 30 days a year when I might put one on. Is that excessive?
