We try so hard to educate, then something like this goes on the news.

Put "48 Inch Fish" in the search window and the video should pop up, It was played on July 20, around 5pm.

http://wcco.com/video/?cid=5

This should have been a documentary on how not to revieve a fish, and u gotta love the "Walleye eating machine" comment. Thanks Don, thanks alot.

Jeez...can't you give the guy any credit for releasing her? He swam her back and forth (did you hear the comment in the background about "that's how they do it on TV?) to revivie her.

He didn't know whether it was a muskie or a northern. I thought for sure the buy was going to keep it and eat it......don't know if that was a legal fish in 'tonka or not.

What we all never see is the number of people who keep legal fish just to say they caught one.

What are YOU doing to educate people about muskies?

Sorry for the rant.....

he wasn't trying to catch a muskie, but he did...it happens.
he released the fish...that doesn't always happen.
the story ends with a great pro-release comment: "now he's a happy fish, and i'm a happy brother." right on.

Hate to say it, but that fish swam away a little better then ones I have released, with even minimal handling. BG

Yea i agree on point that he actually released, I guess I was reffering more to the false walleye eating machine comment, and the fact that having it attatched to the stringer until a news crew shows up and the fwd and back gives people false impressions of how to properly release a muskie. We just had an article in the paper giving tips on how to properly release a muskie: http://www.startribune.com/sports/outdoors/blogs/50593197.html?elr=... Its too bad that doesnt get some live air time.

Yes in the end both the article and the video have the fish being release, but we all know there is a right way and a wrong way to do the same thing. Im not trying to be a D, but the video says/shows alot more than just letting it swim away.

I'm going to be a glass is half full feller on this one.

Let's take a lookey at what we've got here. We've got a non-white dude, releasing a large muskie, and it was broadcast all over the twin cities and now the internet.

This is priceless. Even if this fish died, he didn't die in vain. Lots of people saw this release, so.......if the price is one fish's life, I'm sorry, but BIG DEAL. Sucks if he died, but the message has been sent.

I don't get it?  Not sure why his race has anything to do with it.  To be honest, his race was the last thing I thought about after watching the video.  Muskie-addict, care to explain?

it's a common stereotype that African-Americans are fishing for food.
it's naive' to pretend that image isn't out there, and it's good if this video provides an alternative picture.

yes, please don't put muskies on stringers. but which image will be more lasting: on the stringer or swimming away?

Considering it was an accidental catch, I thought the Old Timer did the right thing and I have no problem with the way it went down.

I'm glad the fish was released and overall, it seems like a positive story... the fish swam away and that's good enough for me.

Almost everybody that doesn't actually fish for muskies is going to handle them wrong by "our" standards. Heck, there's probably plenty of musky fisherman that don't handle them right.

Yeah, it could be been not put on a stringer, and it could have been released quicker, but, he did let it go! Lots of incidental catches don't end as well for the fish. I agree, the more lasting image is of the fish being revived and swimming away.

Could have been better, but it could have been worse for sure!

Race has nothing to do with it, other than its somebody that looks different than you and me and just about everybody on this message board, possibly...hopefully reaching out to people who don't like you and me, being seen on video releasing a muskie.

May God strike me down, I swear that this is purely observation and not prejudice, but let's be honest, the folks putting every single fish they catch on a stringer are largely folks "of culture" and not people who look like every one of you reading this. Some of you may not like to hear that, but try to tell me I'm wrong and I bet you can't.

For once its not a middle aged white dude preaching about letting muskies go. Its someone other than that doing it on his own.

Comprende, amigo?

WCCO the good neighbor has been doing "public interest" stories for decades. I thought it was interesting and was happy to see the fish swim away apparently in good shape. I beat the heck out of another Jacko story or Madonna trying to adopt another kid.

Wow, now i know why people never post pics of a a big fish. This did not go the way i thought it would. Never mind, congrats to the angler and it was a great image for all to have on how to release a muskie. And it a good thing walleye guys dont think muskies eat them all up, bc even the news doesnt say that, or wait......
